Landing Gear Servicing

The sequence for servicing a landing gear oleo strut involves: 1) preparing the aircraft by jacking it up and clearing the area, 2) releasing pressure from the strut and removing the valve core, 3) checking and filling the strut with fluid if needed by compressing and extending the strut, 4) reinserting the valve core and charging the strut to the specified pressure with nitrogen, and 5) lowering the aircraft and making log entries.

DESCRIBE THE SEQUENCE OF SERVICING A LANDING GEAR OLEO STRUT

1. Refer to the appropriate Maintenance Manual for special checks and limitations
2. Ensure that the aircraft is set on level ground with all the downlock pins in place
3. If outside face the aircraft into the wind
4. Ensure that area above and below the wing is clear for jacking
5. Jack up the aircraft to take off weight from the strut
6. Access the strut and remove the valve cap and release all pressure from the strut
slowly to prevent foaming of the fluid
7. Remove valve core
8. Compress the strut and check that fluid level is at the bottom of the filler hole,
if not fill the strut follows;
I. Compress the strut and attach a hose to the valve port and the open end
to a container filled with clean manufacturer recommended hydraulic fluid
II. Extend and compress the strut several time to expel any trapped air from
the strut
III. With the strut compressed check that the fluid level is at the bottom of the
filler hole
IV. With the strut compressed insert the valve core
V. Charge the strut to specified pressure with nitrogen
VI. Install the valve cap and lower the aircraft from the jacks. Check that the
piston extension is in accordance with the manufacturer supplied graph
VII. Upon completion of all work and inspections an appropriate log entry should
be entered
VIII. After 10 to 15 landings measure the extension to ensure dimensions are within
limits
