Song Activity – ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME by Coldplay

Target audience (age): Ensino Fundamental 2, 7th and 8th grades


Aim: working with vocabulary, expressions and collocations related to the meaning of life, answering
questions that help the comprehension of the lyrics, working with the Simple Present, bringing English
closer to students’ routine and having fun by singing the song
Duration: CD min
Organization: individual work or in groups (teacher’s choice)
Material: activity worksheet
Preparation: make copies of the worksheet, check the site with the song

Procedure:
Pre-listening

• Warm up students by asking them if they know the band Coldplay and what songs they know.
Tell them the name of the song they’re going to listen to is Adventure of a Lifetime.

• Brainstorm what the word adventure brings to their minds. Write their ideas on the board.

• Listen to the song and see if their guesses were right.

• Hand out the copies of the worksheets.

• Before listening to the song and / or watching the video, tell students they’re going to work
with some vocabulary from the lyrics. Ask students to do exercise 1 and check their answers.

• Discuss with the whole group the title of the song and what it refers to specifically. Have
students answer question 2 and share their answers with the group.

• If possible, watch the video with the lyrics and check the meanings.

• Draw students’ attention to question 3 that deals with text comprehension. They can answer
these questions in groups of 3 or 4 students. Set a time limit for this activity.

• Check the group’s answers.

• Go over the other activities in the worksheet with students and check if they understand all the
exercises.

• Ask students to do the exercises and help them if necessary.

• In exercise 8, depending on the level of the group, L1 can be used.

• Correct the exercises on the board.

Wrap up activity

• Students sing along with the video.
