1. INTRODUCTION
The heat initially causes water molecules to evaporate. This causes the pressure in the steam
chamber, and thus in the water, to rise. As the steam pressure rise the boiling point temperature
also increases. This is because the water molecules encounter increased resistance as they
attempt to move from liquid to gas form. Consequently, each steam pressure has an accompanying
precisely defined boiling point temperature.
THEORY
As liquid water is heated while the pressure is held constant, the following events occur:
1 The temperature and specific volume will increase from the compressed liquid
2 As the temperature rises, the liquid water expands slightly, and so its specific volume
increases.
3
point water is still a liquid, but any heat addition will cause some of the liquid to vaporize.
4 If the heating process continues, the liquid will reached the temperature at which it begins
to boil.
5 Once boiling starts, the temperature stop rising until the liquid is completely vaporized.
6 During the boiling process, the only change can be observed is a large increase in the
volume and steady decline in the liquid level as a result of more liquid turning to water
vapor (steam).
7 Midway about the vaporization, the cylinder contains equal amounts of liquid and vapor.
As heat transfer continues, the vaporization will continue until the last drop of liquid is
vaporized.
8 Then the saturated vapor exists and vaporization is complete.
9 Once the phase-change process completed, the further transfer of heat results in an
increase in both temperature and specific volume
10 Figure 1 shows the heating process as mention above.

However, in this experiment, the pressure will vary as well as the temperature and the
measurement taken only when the water is completely vaporized (saturated steam). Steam is
completely invisible gas. Pure steam at standard atmosphere pressure occupies 1,600 times the
volume of liquid water.
2. APPARATUS
The experiment WL 204 Steam pressure curve of saturated steam demonstrates the correlation
between steam pressure and heating temperature on an enclosed model steam boiler.
The boiler need only be filled once before the unit is run for the first time.
Fit the enclosed section of tubing to the overflow and open the valve.
Fit the enclosed section of tubing to the drain and close the valve
Remove the plug from the filler opening and pour water into the boiler until it emerges at the
overflow.
Heat up the boiler to 100C. Let the water cook approximately one minutes so that the steam can
pass through the open valve.
Switch on the unit at the master switch when the pressure is 1 atm.
Switch on the heater at the heater switch and heat up the boiler
Log the boiler pressure and temperature values in increment of approximately 0.5 bar

1. Plot the graph of steam temperature (C) against steam pressure in bar by using the
measurement taken in the experiment.
2. Find the temperature of steam from the thermodynamics properties table and plot the
curve at the same graph.
3. Compared the both curved and explain the reason.
