Edific

The document describes an event called "edific" which is a model making competition using popsicle sticks and adhesive. Participants must design an L-shaped cantilever structure that fits within specific dimensional constraints and can sustain the greatest load. Structures will be judged based on their weight in the first round and load carrying capacity in the second round. The team with the highest ratio of sustained load to self-weight will be declared the winner. The event is organized by staff coordinator Ms. Amruta Joshi and student coordinators Sanchay Tiwari and Raj Sheth.

Event Name: “edific” – a model making competition

Staff co-ordinator :MsAmruta Joshi

Student Co-ordinator :SanchayTiwari and Raj Sheth
Task :
Design an L-shaped cantilever structure using popsicle sticks and adhesive that
can sustain maximum load.

Arena
1. The arena consists of a groove with dimension of 75 mm x 100 mm and a
depth of 75 mm as shown in the figure below.
2. It should be noted that the area of cross section of the structure should be
same as that of the cross-section of the groove.

Specifications :

Design Constraints :
1. The height (H) as shown in the figure should be 400 mm with an error of +/-
10 mm Penalty: Participants will be disqualified if this rule is violated.
2. Length of the structure (L) should be between 350 mm
3. Penalty: Participants will be disqualified if this rule is violated.
4. The area of cross section for the vertical section i.e the length between points
A and B must not vary and should be fixed as per the above constraints with an
area of 100 mm x 75 mm.
5. The area of cross section for the horizontal section i.e the length between
points B and C must not vary and should be fixed as per the above constraints
with an area of 75 mm x 75 mm.

Material Constraints :
1. Popsicle sticks (maximum length 115 mm, width 13 mm and thickness 3
mm) and adhesives (fevicol only) should only be used to build the structure.
The popsicle sticks can be cut or trimmed to any shape or size.
2. Adhesive can only be used to join popsicle sticks together; however
adhesives cannot be applied on the free surface of a member made of popsicle
sticks to increase its strength (Only fevicol can be used as an adhesive).
3. The team will be disqualified if found using any other material other than
those mentioned in any part of the structure.
Rules :
1. Shape - structure could be of absolutely any shape satisfying the above
constraints.
2. Once the structure is weighed, you are not allowed to modify your structure
in any way.
3. If any of these constraints are not met, point deductions (as mentioned) or
disqualification may be imposed at the sole discretion of the organizers.
4. Any team that is not ready at the time specified will be disqualified
immediately.
5. Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all.
6. The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules as
they deem fit.

Judging
Judging Criteria
The judging of the structure is based on 2 important criteria:
Round 1 :Weight of the Structure (W) : The self-weight of the structure should
be minimum as possible.
Top 15 light weight structure will be checked for second round.
Round 2 :Load carrying capacity of the structure : Load of 5, 7.5, 10 kg will be
applied with increments.
Winner will be decided based on the ratio of load sustained to self weight.
The team with highest ratio will be winner.

Team Specifications :
A team may consist of a maximum of 4 members. Students from different
educational institutes can form a team.

Entry fee : Rs.150 Only.
