This lesson plan aims to teach first grade students how to express their ideas through both pictures and words using a "half and half" writing strategy. The teacher will read the book "Day of the Dead" to introduce the topic of the Day of the Dead holiday. Students will then brainstorm ideas about the holiday using a spider web graphic organizer before the teacher models filling out a half and half worksheet, drawing a picture on one half and writing sentences on the other. Students will then create their own half and half worksheets about their favorite holiday to practice the strategy.
