A Brief History of PCs: It’s hard to imagine life without the personal computer. But 30 years ago they didn’t exist. Early
models weren’t so user-friendly. Here are some of the milestones on the way to today’s slick machines.
1975: The Altair 8800. Debuts on the cover of Popular Electronics magazine. Users had to build it themselves, and enter
Instructions via switches, since it had no keyboard.
1983: The Compaq Portable is the first fully compatible IBM clone.
1984: The Macintosh’s graphical user interface offers intuitive, mouse-driven operation at a reasonable price. Its pull-
down menus and icons contrast sharply with the text-driven input of previous personal computers.
1985-89: Portable PCs finally become portable, with lightweight, notebook – style laptops, including models by Radio
Shack, Compaq and NEC.
1993: One of the first personal digital assistants to recognize hand-writing on its small screen, the short-lived Apple.
Newton: Is viewed as fatally flawed by some and ahead of its time by others.
1995: Oracle’s Larry Ellison promotes the idea of a low-cost, limited-function $500
“network computer”. But price cuts in full-fledged PCs make the initiative moot.
1998: Apple rolls out its low-priced iMac, designed to give users easy access to Internet.
2002: Eight manu-factures introduce versions of the Microsoft-designed Tablet PC, a Wi-
Fi- equipped laptop you can write on.
GOOD LUCK!
