Handwashing English

Proper hand washing involves cleaning hands with water and soap to remove dirt and microorganisms. Proper Hand Washing

I. Brief Introduction
a. What is hand washing?
This is the act of cleaning one’s hand with the use of water and soap for the purpose of removing soil, dirt, and/ or
microorganisms.
b. When should you wash your hands?
 Before, during, and after preparing food
 Before eating food
 After using the toilet
 After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
 After touching garbage
II. Hand washing Technique
a. Preparation
Ensure that all the needed materials and equipments are available such as soap, water, towel or tissue, and basin.
Remove hand and wrist jewellery.
b. Hand washing Proper
 Wet hands thoroughly under warm running water.
 Apply soap/antiseptic soap.
 Rub palm to palm 5 times
 Rub right palm over the back of left hand up to wrist level 5 times. Do the same with the other hand
 With right hand over back of left hand rub fingers 5 times. Do same with the other hand.
 Rub palm to palm with the fingers interlaced 5 times.
 Wash thumbs of each hand separately using a rotating movement. Repeat it 5 times for each thumb.
 Rub the tips of the fingers against the opposite palm using a circular motion. Repeat this 5 times for each palm.
Also ensure nail beds are washed.
 Rinse hands thoroughly under running water to remove all traces of soap.
 Turn off taps using elbows.
 Dry hands completely using a clean towel or cloth, or if disposable paper towel is available use it. Then, discard
paper towel in waste bin.
