Vacuum pumps- Working principle
 Liquid Ring Vacuum pumps and Compressors are rotary
machines in which liquid is made to act as piston.
 Usually liquid ring vacuum pump consists of 6 main components
shaft, bearing, cone, head, rotor, body/casing
 The rotor is held at an eccentric position with respect to the
body/casing.
 This eccentricity leads to pumping action of the vacuum pump
with liquid acting as the piston as shown below

Starting at ‘A’ the liquid ring is nearest to

Condenser Exhaust Systems - Requirement
 Helps maintain design vacuum in condensers
 Used in removal of non condensable gases in
Condensers present due to leakages, dissolved air etc
 Lower the vacuum better turbine performance and less
steam consumption
 Improvement in exhaust vacuum by 10 mm Hg, reduces
the steam consumption in the turbine by about 1.1 %.
Improvement in turbine efficiency varies significantly
from 0.24 % to 0.4 %
