Known as Ki Hadjar Dewantara, Soewardi Soerjaningrat was a leading Indonesian independence


movement activist, writer, columnist, politician, and most spesifically a pioneer of education for native
Indonesians. He was honored as a National Hero of Indonesia in 1959.

Born with a name of Soewardi, he was lucky to be a part of Javanese noble family who ranked to the
royal house of Yogyakarta. Therefore, he was able to access the colonial public education, a luxury at
that time, graduated from Dutch Primary School and continued to STOVIA, a medical school.
However, he failed to graduate because suffered an illness. He worked as a journalist for a number of
newspapers. During his early career in printed media, Soewardi was considered a talented and
accomplished writer who has a popular style of writing, communicative and yet imbued with freedom
idealism and anti-colonialism sentiments.

Following his activities in several social and political organizations, Soewardi struggled to promote the
public awareness of Indonesia as a national unity. He also organized Boedi Oetomo's first congress
in Yogyakarta. Soewardi wrote several critical columns, however, his most famous one was titled 'If I
am a Dutch'. Due to his writings that were feared to may incite a popular revolt and upset the delicate
social order of the Dutch East Indies, Soewardi was captured and exiled to the Netherlands along
with his best friends, Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo and Douwes Dekker.

During his exile in the Netherlands, Soewardi was active in the Indonesia students' organization, the
Indische Vereeniging (Indies Association), where he contemplated the idea of advancing science
education for natives, by obtaining the Europeesche certificate, an education diploma which later
became the foundation on establishing educational institutions he would found.

In September 1919, Soewardi returned home to Java. Two years later, he established Taman Siswa,
Javanese educational movement that strive to provide education for native population. He detached
his Javanese title to support social equality and chose the name of Ki Hadjar Dewantara instead.

Imogiri is the official cemetery of the royal descendents from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. This
cemetery located on a beautiful hill about 12 km from Yogyakarta. The royal graveyard is reachable
by 345 stone steps leading to it. Imogiri is about 17 km Southeast of Yogyakarta and easily
accessible by the bus of car. The tombs are built within three main courtyards. This Graveyard is the

tomb of Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo, the third king of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. All the kings

reach the top of the hill where the tomb of the kings rested. Entry into the smaller courtyards housing
the tombs of the princes is allowed, but the tomb can only be visited only on Monday 09.00 - 12.00
and Friday 13.00 - 16.00. The visitors must wear the traditional Javanese dress, which however can
be hired on the spot at a modest fee. The cemetery is closed during the Moslem month of Ramadhan.
