This score has been edited and transcribed from Vincenzo Galilei’s treaty on lute tabulation, Il Fronimo, p. 17, Venezia
1584 with lyrics from Psalm 113 as found in the Latin Vulgata Bible. Galilei mentions In exitu Israel as a draft of a
composition which would probably contain music for all 17 verses of Psalm 113 while the version in Il Fronimo has only
the first 6 verses composed. However, as far as known to the editor this fragment is the only surviving source of the work.
In Il Fronimo the vocal parts are printed as score above the tablature. In this edition the note values of the vocal parts
have been halved.
All ties in the vocal parts have been added by the editor, most of them, but not all, based on string hold indications in
the tablature.
Galilei has only applied lyrics to the Basso part. The text underlay of the remaining parts have been supplied by the
editor.
Il Fronimo is formed as a dialogue between a wise lute master and his pupil, a young Florentine nobleman. In the dialogue
text commenting many of the scores and lute tablatures the pupil is encouraged to carefully study In exitu Israel and to
rehearse it at as a solo cantilena accompanied by lute. The part to be sung is the Basso. However, when this part rests
the singer should in stead take over the Tenor part, ie. act as a sort of vocal basso seguente. One of the scores of this
edition contains an attempt to realize the cantilena as outlined by Galilei.
