DigiTRON connectors are based around the unique and patented Controlled
Environment (CE) Principle.
This arrangement ensures the highest level of integrity for long life and repeated
subsea mating capability.
• The whole assembly is pressure balanced to minimise stress within the sealing areas

Technical Philosophy
CE Principle - Sequence of Operations
1 Use pressure balancing to
minimise material stress.
2 Use modular systems to
achieve maximum
flexibility whilst utilising
proven components.
3 Include at least one level
of redundancy on high
integrity connectors.
4 Mechanical gland sealing
1 Receptacle & plug prior to mating 2 Receptacle pin engages with shuttle pin of plug assembly
avoids many problems
associated with moulding
to cable sheaths.
5 Ensure material
compatibility and
traceability - the majority
of Siemens Subsea
subsea connectors have a
30 year design life with
no requirement for
servicing. 3 Receptacle pin enters first oil chamber of the primary 4 Receptacle pin enters secondary diaphragm and makes
diaphragm and pushes back the shuttle pin full contact with plug socket

Although not as simple as oil tube junction boxes, cable junction boxes
are available in a wide range of configurations.
Cable junction boxes are usually gel filled and pressure compensated. For
permanent fixtures, cables enter through penetrators fitted with pressure
compensated cable glands.

AquaTRON is more flexible than cable and is often more convenient for
short jumpers and / or complex harnesses consisting of several oil tube
segments, connectors, sensors, actuators and marshalling or junction
boxes.

A major advantage of AquaTRON oil tube is the ease with which complex
harnesses can be factory assembled. Harnesses can include connectors,
actuators, sensors and junction boxes. The junction box usually serves one
of two purposes:
1 Distribution
One input signal is distributed to several outputs.
An insert facilitates insulation around the conductor junctions.
2 Marshalling
One input connector has it’s conductors marshalled to several
output connectors. In this configuration, no inserts are required.

This is the evolution from our current standard AquaTRON Junction Box.
This new product does not replace the existing design but offers an
alternative solution giving customers a higher specification design
which is pressure compensated, isolated and will work to a depth of
4000 metres. Currently available in Stainless Steel (UNS S31603) as
standard (cathodic protection required).
We can now offer JIC and the standard Omnitec / AquaTRON hose fittings in
two sizes. Below is a typical table for the number of variations available from
1 in and 1 out, to 4 in and 4 out for JIC fitting for 0.5” NB AquaTRON hose.
This option allows a customer to specify any of the hose fittings in a
combination to suit their requirements.

Glossary of Terms
Term Description
Bulkhead.................................... A boundary wall separating fluids on either side. There may be a pressure difference between the two sides.
Bulkhead mounted connector.... A connector that fits into, and seals against, a bulkhead. The mating end of the connector points to the external side, while the
internal side is fitted with tails to facilitate termination within the enclosure.
Note that a bulkhead connector is similar to a penetrator except that a connector is easily de-mated.
Cable to conductor boot............. An elastomeric component that seals over the cable sheath and the individual conductors. Usually located within a cable gland
where the individual conductors emerge from the cable.
Cathodic protection.................... An electrochemical method of controlling corrosion, achieved by making a metal cathodic by means of impressed current or
attachment to a sacrificial anode (usually magnesium, aluminium or zinc).
CE / Controlled Environment...... A patented fluid filled Siemens Subsea connector principle. The electrical sockets contained within the plug are protected within
oil chambers (the 'Controlled Environment'). During mating, the receptacle pins enter the controlled environment through seals,
before the electrical connection is made in the controlled environment.
Dummy connector...................... Connector having a fully operating mating front end but a blank backshell at the termination end. Dummies have two main
uses:
1) Protecting contacts that might otherwise be exposed to seawater.
2) Creating a loop between a pair of conductors for test purposes e.g. when pulling through an umbilical.
Field assembled gland............... A cable gland that can be assembled on site / offshore.
Flange mounted......................... A connector with a flange. Note: This is not the same as a bulkhead mounted connector.
Gel.............................................. A self repairing, hydrophobic gel used by Siemens Subsea to fill subsea glands. The gel allows pressure balancing and is
electrically inert.
Gland..........................................
The part of the connector / penetrator where a cable is terminated.
In-line connector........................
Connectors that terminate to a cable or oil tube segment.
Insert..........................................
The centre part of the connector / penetrator containing the electrical contacts.
Instrumentation.........................
Typically the range catered for by the DigiTRON connector e.g: up to 1000V and 40A.
Junction box...............................
A component used in subsea systems where several cables / conductors are joined together. A junction box contains an insert
which performs a multiple conductor joint whilst maintaining conductor sheath integrity.
Marshalling box.........................
A component used in oil tube systems to collect the inputs from several 4 way connectors to a 7 or 12 way connector. Unlike a
junction box, signals are not duplicated.
Oil tube.......................................
An alternative to cable for subsea jumpers. The conductors are contained within a pressure-balanced oil-filled hose rather than
within a cable.
Parking receptacle.....................
Parking receptacles are very simple devices that allow a loose CE plug connector to be 'parked' or fixed. CE plug connectors do
not need dummy connectors as the sockets are protected from seawater by the oil chambers.
PEEK™ (Victrex Limited).............
PolyEtherEtherKetone. An engineering thermoplastic with excellent insulation properties.
Penetrator..................................
A permanent connection through a bulkhead.
Plug............................................
The connector half which fits inside the receptacle. In CE terminology, the plug contains electrical sockets within oil-filled
chambers.
Receptacle..................................
The connector half into which the plug is inserted. In CE terminology, the receptacle contains the electrical pins.
Redundancy...............................
Achieved by supplying a back up to key system components so that failure of one component will not result in electrical failure.
ROV.............................................
Subsea Remotely Operated Vehicle. Used to carry out tasks that are beyond economic diver depth, range or capability.
Shuttle pin..................................
The pin that seals the oil chambers within CE plug connectors when unmated.
The shuttle pin is displaced by the receptacle pin during mating.
Stab plates..................................
Two plates which contain hydraulic and/or electrical connectors. Enables remote mating of the connectors when the distance
between the plates is reduced.
Termination sleeve.....................
A sleeve that fits over terminations, providing a continuous insulation path.
Test connectors..........................
Low cost connectors, specifically manufactured for system testing. They are not waterproof and are usually fitted with long tails for
connecting to test equipment. If a system terminates in a true subsea receptacle, a test plug is used to prevent damage to the pins.
UNS S31603................................ The standard grade of stainless steel used for most subsea connectors when a corrosion protection system is in operation.
UNS S32550................................ A superior specification of stainless steel (super duplex) used to achieve long life where protection systems are not
available/reliable.
