Music 19A: Fundamental of Music Theory

Course Descriptions:
Music 19A curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of theory of tonal music. The topics
covered in class include: pitch and rhythmic notations, intervals, major and minor modes,
and the basic building blocks of diatonic tonal harmony (triads, seventh chords, and basic
harmonic functions).
By the end of the quarter, you will be able to harmonize a simple tune, and analyze
a short excerpts from the Classical music repertoire.
Lectures are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:50. On Fridays we will
meet in small groups and the TAs, and myself will work with you on developing your
inner and outer ears. Music 19A leads directly to Music 21 you don’t need to take
Music 19B.

Required Text: Jane Piper Clendinning, Elizabeth West Marvin, Joel Philips, The
Musician's Guide to Fundamentals, Second Edition, (Norton 2014).
Course Reader:
The Course Reader is Free. You will get it on the week of classes.
Assessments:
There are total of seven homework assignments assigned every Wed and due on
the following Monday.
Test: In class midterm and a take –home Final

Late Assignments:
Late assignments will be accepted only with a special arrangement prior to the due date.

Participation Policy:

Class begins promptly at 1:30. Full attendance and participation are expected. Please let me
know if you need to miss a class ahead of time (if you can).

Please have manuscript paper, and a pencil at each meeting and please bring the Course
Reader and the textbook to class.
