Road Design Practice

Objective :

To know the actual condition of four junction (Jalan Wonosari km 6, Jalan Wonosari
km 7, Jalan Wiyorolor, Jalan Ahmad Wahid) which is still proper to use or redesign.

Apparatus :

a. Pen
b. Papet
c. Calculator
d. Video Recorder
e. Measuring Tape
f. Stopwatch
g. Counter

Procedure :
a. First, we go to the four junction site and then prepare the equipment for
recording.
b. Then start the recording junction and every 15 minutes we change the angle of
recorinding.
c. We also record the time of red, green and yellow of each traffic light.
d. After finish recording, we counti the heavy vehicle, light vehicle and
motorcycle for every junction to know the amount of vehicle that pass the
junction by using counter.
e. Then we multiply the data with constant (heavy vehicle = 1.2 ; light vehicle =
1 ; motorcycle = 0.5 ) to get the total traffic flow ( PCU )
f. After we get the PCU we use the Websterr’s Methode to determine the
effective green time.
Steps of Websterr Method :

1. Decide on te stage and their sequence

2. Calculate the q/s values for each movement
3. Find the critical q/s = y values for each stage
4. Calculate Y = ∑y if Y > 0.8 try again
5. Calculate the total lost time in the cycle = L
1.5𝐿+5
6. Calculate C0 =
1−𝑌
7. Choose a suitable cycle time between 0.75 and 1.5 Co
8. Calculate total effective green ∑g = C – L
9. Calculate effective green of each stage by spliting ∑g in proportion to the
Critical y values i.e.
10. Calculate the actual green time from ( fig 8.1 )
k + a = g + I1 + I2
where : k = displayed green
a = displayed ember
I1 , I2 = Start and end loss for the stage

3. Find C0 = 1−𝑌
1.5(14)+5
C0 = 1−𝟎.𝟔𝟔𝟑𝟏𝟕 = 77.19

4. Use L/(1-Y) ≥ C0
14/(1-0.66317) = 41,56 < Co (NO)

5. Use (1.5L + 5) / (1-Y)

(1.5(14) + 5 ) / (1-0.66317) = 77.19 ≥ C0 (YES)

6. Find λ = yi (c-L)/Y

No. Road y λ = yi (c-L)/Y

1 Jalan Wonosari km 6 (North) 0.22698 21.62774
2 Jalan Wonosari km 7 (South) 0.25701 24.48914
3 Jalan Wiyoro lor (West) 0.13523 12.88353
4 Jalan Ahmad Wahid (East) 0.04395 4.18776

CONCLUSION

Based on Websterr’s method, we can know that :

a. Green time (east) < λ east = 48 > 21.63

b. Green time (north) < λ north = 22 < 24.49
c. Green time (south) < λ south = 22 >12.88
d. Green time (west) < λ west = 47 > 4.18

From the data and calculation that we got, only junctions b that already have the optimum
value, so the other junction need any redesign.
