A Ballad

A child stops to watch butterflies dancing above maple trees. One butterfly lands on the child's finger, and the child gently pets its fragile, patterned wing. The poem expresses a desire to stay among the fluttering butterflies but acknowledges that nothing lasts forever and butterflies will fly away.

Christian Helgeson

Butterflies Draft #2
The butterflies a buzzing
Above my maple hair
Did twirl and dance above me
While I did stop and stare

Their fiery hides shined fiercely

As one came down to me
And I, receiving him
Did pet him gently

As gentle as a child can

To bugs tender as he
My finger barely pricking
The fragile, patterned wing

If you suffered as I did

A strong desire to stay
Amongst the fluttering decoupage
I'd rather you not delay

Leave now from this gentle place

And scatter sensations astray
For nothing lasts forever
And butterflies fly away
