KD MAXIMUM TORQUE ANGLE ADJUSTMENT

For adjustments hook-up a phase angle meter such that voltage will
be reference and current is shown in degrees lagging the voltage.

PHASE TO PHASE UNIT

1. Lift the “L” leads from MA and MC auto-transformers.
2. Hook current source polarity through the phase angle
meter to terminal 14 of the KD under test.
3. Hook terminal 15 of the KD to the non-polarity side of the
current source.
4. FOR COMPENSATOR TAB; Hook voltage channel polarity
to “L” of the MA auto-transformer and non-polarity to:
a. KD-4/41, the non-slider side of R2A;
b. KD-10/11, the side of R2A with multiple leads on it.
5. Pass 10 amperes through the KD and phase angle meter.
[Note that the voltage induced into the secondary of the
TAB compensator will be ~ (TTAP x The Current)].
6. Adjust:
a. KD-4/41, R2A until the phase angle equals the
desired maximum torque angle.
b. KD-10/11, P2A for the desired maximum torque angle.
7. FOR COMPENSATOR TBC; Hook voltage channel polarity
to “L” of the MC auto-transformer and non-polarity to:
a. KD-4/41, the non-slider side of R2C;
b. KD-10/11, the side of R2C multiple leads on it.
8. Pass 10 amperes through the KD and phase angle meter.
[Note voltage will be as it was with the TAB Compensator].
9. Adjust:
a. KD-4/41, R2C until the phase angle equals the desired
maximum torque angle.
b. KD-10/11, P2C for the desired maximum torque angle.

THREE PHASE UNIT

1. Lift the “L” lead from the M auto-transformer secondary.
2. Hook voltage channel polarity to “L” and non-polarity to:
a. KD-4/41, the non-slider side of R3 or R3A;
b. KD-10/11, the side of R3 with multiple leads.
3. Hook current source polarity through the phase angle
meter and to terminal 19 of the KD under test.
4. Hook terminal 18 of the KD to the non-polarity side of the
current source.
5. Pass ten amperes through the KD and phase angle meter.
[Note that the voltage induced into the secondary of the
T compensator will be ~ (1.5 x TTAP x The Current)].
6. Adjust:
a. KD-4/41, R3 until the phase angle equals the desired
maximum torque angle.
b. KD-10/11, P3 for the desired maximum torque angle.

The following are some readings I obtained using various quantities

and polarities as my reference while adjusting a KD-10 relay. I provide
them in the hope that I can save some of you from some of the
confusion I experienced when I first tried to use these methods for
adjusting the KD. TTAPS = 5.8

The quantity to the left was my reference, and the quantity to the
right was read in degrees lagging the quantity to the left.
