Defending: Pornography

By Georgia Betteridge & Emily Friswell

Porn in History
Porn has been around for such a long time and in history it is prevalent in
art, religion and society in general.

For example: A 5200 BCE statue of a man and women having sexual
intercourse was discovered in Germany.

“Archaeologists called its location the world’s oldest porn site when they discovered it
in 2005” (Head, T. 2018)

There are many more historical artefacts like this and so it is all subjective
to the different parts of history and cannot just be removed or undermined
as a lesser importance in comparison to other themes in history.
Teenage Pregnancy Rates
The more prevalent pornography has become the
longer teenagers wait to have sex and lower the
teenage pregnancy rate is. It is down 40 percent
from its peak in 1990.

“Statistics seems to support this shift to online sexual

interaction. Recent U.S. research found the number of
high school students who have never had sex has
increased by more than 10 per cent in two years,
while another study suggested 93 per cent of boys
and 62 per cent of girls were exposed to online
pornography as adolescents” (Hoyle, A. 2017)

This is evidence that pornography is a positive

thing because it is making teenagers be more Fig. 1: Pregnancy rates for adolescent females,

to wait longer to have sex.
Crime Rates
The US supreme court has been forced to define pornography and set a legal place for it, as
access to porn has increased.

As an example of how allowing porn could lower crime rates:

John Cleland’s book ‘Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure’ (1748) was confiscated by British
authorities but it was then almost immediately pirated and redistributed

It was “considered to be obscene, impure and indecent according to The Harvard Crimson as it has been
recorded that Judge Eugene A Hudson of Suffolk County Superior Court condemned it to be so” (J.H, T.
2017)

The book was banned until the 1960’s. As the book was confiscated it forced people who
wanted this product to commit a crime by using piracy and redistributing the book, however if
the book hadn't been confiscated it would have been readily available and therefore there
would have been no need to commit any crimes.
Rape rates
The forcible rape rate in the US has
fallen by 85 percent since 1980. Many
psychologists theorise that pornography
allows viewers to express any deep
sexual desires, reducing the inclination to
carry out these lusts through criminal
action.

“This graph shows the reported forcible rape

rate in the United States from 1990 to 2017. In
2017, the nationwide rate was 30.7 cases per
100,000 of the population. THe total number of
cases in the United States stood at 99,856 in
2017” (Statista, 2018)
Pornography increases tolerance of other
Tolerance to others people’s sexualities as pornography is open to
so many things and therefore it is seen as more
acceptable.

Porn exposes us to a wider range of sexualities,

gender and race so you can understand people
more that are different from yourself or even
feel part of a community of like minded people.

“Women and men - but women in particular - are

breaking down centuries-old taboos and claiming our
sexualities in public” (McGowan, E. 2015)
Fig. 3: tolerance to other sexualities
Relationships
Pornography helps sustain sexual interests in long term relationships and helps
partners openly talk to their partner about sex. Rather than hiding information
on sex that may need to be discussed, we’re now talking about it openly.

We’re becoming more truthful with ourselves and possibly our partners due to
the increased accessibility of porn and there is more deterioration of the
ideology that porn itself is dirty or bad.

“Talking about porn may actually help couple to be more honest and accepting of one
another, and get to the bottom of some of those other issues” (Rahhal, N. 2017)

This makes people’s communication better and the connections between

people better, which is a healthier way to live and allows people to have
healthier relationships.
Entertainment
One example of just how popular porn is, is the podcast
“My Dad wrote a Porno”

In this comedy podcast, the book, written by the show’s

creator’s Dad, is read aloud to his two friends.

“With over 150 million downloads, a sell-out world tour, Hollywood

fans including Dame Emma Thompson, Elijah Wood, Daisy Ridley,
Nicholas Hoult & Michael Sheen and rave reviews from the likes of
variety, The Guardian and Time Magazine, My Dad Wrote a Porno
is quite simply ‘a cultural phenomenon’ (The Sunday Times)”
(Mydadwroteaporno.com)

The success of this podcast proves how popular porn is Figure 4: My Dad Wrote a Porno Podcast
and how people are beginning to accept it and talk about it
more, as proven by their sell-out tour and famous fans.
