PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

1 . GENERAL

This Document shall not be used as a basis for manufacture and supply of
original and replacement parts to AIRBUS INDUSTRIE unless specifically
required in a contract or purchase agreement .

1 .1 Scope

This specification describes methods for cleaning and degreasing with

alkaline solutions for metal parts .

The process shall be carried out prior to subsequent pickling processes

in order to ensure that the components are free from grease and dust
when they are placed in the pickling baths .

Cleaning methods are :

a) Immersion cleaning

b) Spray cleaning

NOTE : Spray cleaning is only applicable for the removal of cutting

fluids from aluminum alloy parts prior to manufacturing operations
such as machining, deburring etc .

1 .2 Limitations

The following parts shall not be treated according to this specification .

a) Assemblies or welded structures with faying surfaces in which

entrapment of solution may occur .

b) Parts with anodic or chromate conversion coatings because the level

of corrosion protection will be reduced by this treatment .

NOTE : Titanium parts and its alloys may not be degreased with
chlorinated solvents .

2. EQUIPMENT . MATERIALS, PERSONNEL

2 .1 Equipment and plant

a) Rinsing and cleaning equipment shall be capable of satisfying the

requirements of this specification .

b) The immersion cleaning tanks made of plastic, stainless steel or

steel with plastic lining shall be provided with :
- a heating system to maintain the solutions at the specified
temperature,
- facilities for agitating the solutions if necessary to minimize
temperature and concentration variations,
- adequate fume extraction .

c) Compressed air used for solution agitation or drying shall be free

from moisture, oil and solid particles .

2 .3 Health and safety statement

This specification does not necessarily detail the precautions necessary

to meet the requirements of health and safety . It is the responsibility
of the user of this specification to consult and establish appropriate
health and safety precautions and the method should be operated only by
trained personnel .

3. PROCESS

3 .1 Immersion cleaning

3 .1 .1 General remarks

a) Parts shall be racked or wired in such a manner that :

- solutions and rinse water will contact all surfaces to be treated,
- carry over of solutions is limited to a minimum and
- damage to parts is prevented .

Tubes which cannot be racked so that they will drain, must be given
special handling treatments to remove solutions which would otherwise
be entrapped and to prevent air pockets . Flush and/or reposition
tubes as necessary to completely remove all pickling solution and
rinse water .

b) When possible, cleaning solutions, rinse water, or parts shall be

agitated during processing . All cleaning solutions shall be agitated
after prolonged standing or after addition of chemicals or water to
ensure uniformity of concentration . Air or mechanical agitation can
be used . For air agitation the bath shall be at the required
temperature to avoid the formation of excessive foam .

c) After cleaning and rinsing the parts shall be free from grease, oil,
smut and other contamination . This means the surfaces shall be
water-break free . A water-break free surface is one which, when
wetted with clean water (max . 35 ° C), either by immersion or spray
will maintain a continuous film of water, for a minimum of 30
seconds .

PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

d) The temperatures of the cleaning solutions shall be within the

allowable ranges during processing . Ensure that the temperature of
any solution shall never rise above 80°C as emulsifiers might become
insoluble .

e) Mixing acid and alkaline solutions in the same water rinse might
result in a precipitation of insoluble material on the surface of
the part . Therefore alkaline cleaned parts shall not be rinsed in
immersion rinse tanks that follow acid processing .

3 .1 .2 Selection of cleaning solution

The appropriate cleaning solution shall be selected from Table 1 .

CLEANER Concentr . Temp . Immersion Metals and their alloys to

time be cleaned

Table 1

3 .1 .3 Cleaning solutions (General)

a) The cleaning solutions shall be kept free of visible debris

Operations shall be suspended and corrections made when :

surfaces do not remain water-break free after cleaning,

a non removable smut is formed or particles are deposited on the
surface of the parts,
the solution temperature or composition is outside the control
Limits,
the solution is not at the required operating level,
the solution is no longer effective,
parts are pitted and
the sludge which forms at the bottom of the tank interferes with
the proper operation of the solution .

b) Oil, grease, etc ., accumulating on the surface of the solutions,

shall be removed by skimming, overflowing or other suitable means as
often as is necessary .

c) The following procedure shall be used for making-up alkaline cleaner

solutions :

Fill the clean tank to aproximately 2/3 full with deionized or tap
water .
Heat within the required temperature limits .
Distribute the required quantity of cleaner uniformly over the
water surface in small quantities and agitate thoroughly .
When the cleaner is completely dissolved fill the tank with
deionized or tap water to the operating level and agitate .

d) The level of the cleaning solutions shall be maintained within 5 cm

of the operating level .

3 .1 .4 Pre-cleaning

The parts shall be relatively free of visible contamination and temporary

lacquer coatings to minimize the contamination in the cleaning tanks . If
this is not the case, the parts shall be pre-cleaned by vapour
degreasing in accordance with PMS 01-01-01 (for titanium parts the
limitations in 1 .2 shall be observed) or by solvent cleaning in
accordance with PMS 01-01-16 .

Remark : After vapour degreasing and prior to commencing alkaline

cleaning, parts shall be throughly dried to prevent
contamination of alkaline cleaner solutions with solvent .

3 .1 .5 Cleaning procedure

The parts shall be treated as follows :

a) Immerse the parts in the applicable cleaner solution in accordance

with Table 1 . Consult 3 .1 .1 b) for the use of agitation . Lightly
scrub the wet surface with a nylon brush, if necessary, to assist
removal of stubborn contamination .

b) Remove the parts from the cleaning solution and rinse immediately in
cold running water for a minimum of 5 minutes without allowing the
parts to dry . Wherever possible, rinsing after cleaning in a
solution operated above 70°C should include the use of a waterfog
curtain above the alkaline tank to avoid the solution drying on the
part .

c) Inspect parts for water-break according to 3 .1 .1 c) during draining .

d) Repeat steps a) through c) until water-break free surface is

obtained .

e) Rinse in hot (e .g . 60 - 80°C) deionized water (see PMS 01-01-18) if

desired to facilitate drying .

f) Allow parts to air dry, 90° C maximum, except where a wet process
follows immediately .

g) Protect the dried parts from contamination and abrasion . Wrap if

necessary .

3 .2 Spray cleaning

3 .2 .1 General remarks

a) Parts shall be racked or positioned in such a manner that solutions

and rinse water will contact all surfaces to be treated .

b) After final rinsing the parts shall be visibly clean, a water-break

free surface i s prefered but not required .

c) The temperature of the cleaning solution shall be within the

allowable ranges during processing . The temperature of the solution
shall never rise above 80°C as emulsifiers might become insoluble .

3 .2 .2 Cleaning solution (General)

Operations shall be suspended and corrections made when :

a) surfaces do not become visibly clean after cleaning

b) the solution temperature or composition is outside the control limits
or
c) the solution is no longer effective

3 .2 .3 Cleaning procedure

The parts shall be treated as follows :

a) Spray clean with Turco 4215-NC-LT (see Table 2) as long as necessary

to obtain a visibly clean surface (1 - 5 minutes) .

b) Spray rinse immediately after cleaning with cold water and check for
contamination .

c) Repeat steps 3 .2 .3 a) and 3 .2 .3 b) if parts are not visibly clean .
