Bissellheattreatthe majorityof pinsby austempering,
widelvconsidered to be superiorto the conventional
hardenandtemperingprocess.
Austempering offers significantimprovementsin
toughness, tensilestrength,andhardness.
ductility, when
comparedwith oil hardenandtempering. In simpleterms
the pins are stronger and tougher.
The differencebetweenaustempering andoil hardenand
temperingis illustrated on the diagram. Austempering is an
isothermal transformation in hot saltto form bainite;
whereasthe conventional hardenandtemperingprocessis
a rapidoil quenchfollowedby tempering,to produce
temperedmartensite.
