    Deliverables

    Develop an understanding of the Research and Development expenditure of various


    industries.

     Identify patterns, trends – increasing, decreasing, stagnant – industry wise, year wise,
    etc.
     What are the research areas in which companies are investing their time, money and
    efforts? A qualitative study may be undertaken by looking at 2-3 firms in each industry
    and developing insights. The study could be extended to about 3-4 prominent
    industries. Annual reports / web sites can be sources
     Compute the R&D intensity of firms, identify if it significantly influences firm
    performance – here regression can be used. For financial indicators of firm
    performance, measures like price to book value, P/E or book value per share can be
    taken up. Different interpretations can be given based on the variables chosen.
     Are there linkages of R&D with other routine expenditure like advertising and
    marketing expenditure? Correlations can be studied.
     You can select firms which are listed on the BSE. This may reduce the data set to about
    4000 firms or so. Further filters can subsequently reduce the data set to about 1000
    firms – you may use your judgment for choice of the data set.
     Effectively, both qualitative and quantitative approaches must be used in the report.

    Guidelines

    Word limit 4000 words. Recommended: 2500-3000 words.

    Plagiarism will invite stringent penalty.
