Computational Assignment#1

This document contains a computational methods assignment from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wollega University College of Engineering & Technology. It includes 3 questions asking students to round numbers to 4 significant figures, find the sum of approximate numbers, and calculate absolute error, relative error, and percentage error given true and approximate values. Students are asked to find unknown true or approximate values given parts of the error calculations. The assignment aims to help students learn computational methods.

Q1. Round-off the following numbers correct to 4- significant figures.

(i) 4.79132 (ii) 23.2975 (iii) 0.000956754 (iv) 0.0082665 (v) 4378.562 (vi) 2.000469

(vii) 3.35008 (viii) 87.5555 (ix) 4.000559 (x) 0.0000300085

Q2. Find the sum of the following approximate numbers, if the numbers
are correct to the last digit:

a) 8.37642, 6.876, 2.896555, 0.22359

b) 0.00024356, 19.42, 8.987, 0.35793, 173682, 3.73928

Q3. a) Find the absolute error (EA), relative error (ER) and percentage error (EP) of
the numbers whose true value (VT) and approximate value (VA) are given:
i) VT = 5.86593, VA=5.866;
ii) VT = 2.55555, VA = 2.556;
iii) VT = 9.75600, VA=9.757
b) Given EA= 0.5× , ER=0.37× , find VT.
c) If VA=0.468, EP=6%, find VA.
