Oil Spill Prevention

1.0 System Description

1.1 Function
The Oil Spill Prevention System provides a means of collecting and directing oily waste to an
oil water separator for treatment.

1.2 Major Components

The Oil Spill Prevention System consists of the following major components:

· Building floor drains/inslab piping.

· Equipment drains.

· Below grade piping.

· Below ground oil-water separator(s).

1.3 Process Description

Buildings containing equipment which could possibly leak oil shall contain floor drains which
shall be routed into the oily waste system. In addition to building floor drains, all equipment
and tanks containing 1,892 liters (500 gallons) or more of oil shall be designed with a
containment system. These containment systems shall be tied into the oily waste system. The
entire oily waste system shall be routed to an oil-water separator(s). Flow from the
containment system around bulk fuel oil storage tanks shall be valve controlled. The discharge
from the oil-water separator(s) shall be routed to the wastewater collection basin. A portable
pump shall be provided to remove the oil from the separator(s) by pumping to a truck.

2.0 System Design Criteria
2.1 Operating Conditions
The oil-water separator(s) shall be a below grade facility. All below grade piping associated
with the oily waste system shall be oil resistant pipe.

2.2 Functional Constraints

The number and location of oil-water separator(s) shall be determined by the Contractor.

The oil-water separator(s) shall be designed to contain the total volume of oil in the largest
transformer, and the discharge rate shall be guaranteed to contain less than 10 ppm (parts per
million) of oil in its discharge stream or the applicable governmental regulations, whichever
are more stringent.

If the oil-water separators are designed utilizing concrete, that concrete shall be designed to
the requirements outlined in Section 71.0301 entitled Cast-in-Place Concrete.

2.3 Physical Constraints

The quantity of oil-water separators shall be kept at a practical minimum The oil-water
separators shall utilize a coalescing media.

2.4 Process Control

None.
