Baseball by Eavan
Over the years baseball came to be from old games that evolved into the sport. In 1330 the people of
England played a game with a ball and a bat witch spread throughout the country’s. After years of that
game being played it some how came to the colonies. In the 1800s Abner Doubleday played the first
game of baseball in Cooperstown. After that the game got popular by the people and became a sport in
1850. It was played for some years, then in 1876 the United States wanted to spread it around the
world. They sent bats and ball to the DR and Puedo Rico. After
they started to send the bats and balls to Japan and other Asin
countries making baseball a well known sport.
Most counties have some sort of stick and ball game. One of the
most popular being cricket. Historians believe that baseball
evolved from a game called townball. Played in the English
countries in the 19th centurey. In the US small towns formed
teams of this game and large cities formed clubs. In 1845 Alexander Cartwright wanted to from a list of
rules (much like baseball rules now) so all can play. The first recorded baseball game was in 1846 with
the teams the Knickerbockers and the New York Baseball Club. The NYBBC won against the
Knickerbockers. After this more teams started to form around the US and baseball was on the rise.
The game of baseball has evolved but so has the equipment. The baseball weighing 5 ounces made
with wool and cowhide and have a cercumfrince of 9 inches used to be a lot different. Back in the
1920s a ball had little weight to it and had a horsehide casing over it. Only 5 or 6 balls would be
used during the game as well, unlike today when 60 to 70 are used a single game. Helmets used to
be obsolete. Hitters used to never use them until they were issued because of injuries. Rules have
changed too, pitchers used to be able to use tare and spit to move the ball but that rule was changed
August 16, 1920 because Ray Chapman was struck and killed by a pitch
in the head. The game would never be the same.

The baseball bat is essential to baseball and changed a lot over time. In 1884 John Hillerich watched
Louisville player Pete Browning become frustrated after breaking his favorite bat. He walked up to him
after the game and offed him to make a new bat. So they went to his wood shop and made a new bat out
of white ash wood. The next game Pete Browning went three for three and people were demanding new
bats. The company from then on was forever know as Louisville slugger. But rules changed and the
company had to change the bat and round them at the end of the bat. Not long after the rise of aluminum
bats came in 1924. MLB players were not allowed to use metal bats and no one used one in game till
1970 when the company “worth” mad a little league bat. In 2001 Barry Bonds hit
a record of 71 home runs in one season. Later everyone found out he was using
maple bats and they are high demand ever sense.
The change of catcher gear over time is big. Catchers gear used to be small
leather chest plates and knee pads. The helmet was made off metal and leather.
Most catchers back then said they Severe nerve and neck pains for the rest of their lives. After
reports about the pain came out companies had to make a change. They started to make the gear
more thick and wider for better protection. Now companies like Easton and Rawlings use new
technology to make the pads more absorbent and protecting.
Over the years baseball has come to be from lots of other countries and made into the sport it is now.
Baseball has evolved tremendously. From protection and rules baseball changed from the start. Many
companies and people changed the game forever. To this day the game is still changing. From protection
to rules to new equipment. The game has changed dramatically.
