Determination of Liquid Limit of Soil using
Casagrande Apparatus:

Designation:
ASTM D 4318
BS 1377 (Fall Cone Method)

Liquid Limit:
Moisture content at which soil transform from liquid to plastic state. OR
the moisture content at which 2mm void loop in a soil pack will close at
a distance of 0.5 in or 13mm when dropped 25 times in a standard brass
cup falling 1cm each time at a rate of 2 drops per sec while in a standard
liquid limit device.
Significance and Use:
The liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index of soils
are also used extensively, either individually or together,
with other soil properties to correlate with engineering
behavior such as
Compressibility.
Hydraulic conductivity (permeability).
Construction specification.
Soil classification.
Shear strength.
Apparatus:
 Casagrande apparatus.
 Grooving tool.
 Drying oven. (100±5ºC).
 Container for moisture content.
 Weighing balance.
 Soil sample.

Procedure:
 Pass soil sample from sieve no. #40(0.425mm) and 250g sample
required.
 Thoroughly mix the specimen (soil) in its mixing dish, and, if
necessary, adjust its water content until the consistency requires
about 10 to 50 blows of the liquid limit device to close the groove.
 A sufficient quantity of paste shall be placed in cup and spread
with the spatula so that the depth of paste in the middle of cup(the
point of maximum thickness) is equal to 10mm
 Make a Groove in the paste.
 Rotate the handle of casagrande apparatus with 2 revolutions per
second.
 The number of blows required to close the Groove shall be noted.
 Remix the entire soil specimen in the dish adding distilled water to
increase the water content of the soil and decrease the number of
blows required to close the groove. Repeat for at least two
additional trials producing successively lower numbers of blows to
close the groove.
 Determine the moisture content “W” of the soil specimen from
each trial in accordance with Test Methods
 Plot the graph between moisture content and number of blows.
