Reading Books
When we were little, we probably read many books. Starting from children’s stories
transitioning to grade school textbooks as we grew. For some, they grew to love books as
they made this a hobby even. However, that is not the case for most, more so today because
of the rise of technology.
Before technology took over the world, people would read the newspapers, magazines and
send letters to each other. Times were so simpler back then that people had no choice but to
read books for entertainment.
Today, people who read not only books but all forms of published paper is a rare sight. The
existence of technological advancement almost brought the book industry to ruin. With e-
books and news readily available with just one click, who would even turn to books now?
Fortunately, there are still people who can be considered old school as they prefer physical
books instead of e-books.
This is why reading books have become more and more vital in this day and age especially
for the adults. People are finding more and more ways just for life to become easier than it
already is. Therefore, the need to read books becomes apparent so we can counter the bad
effects of the excessive use of technology.
Reading has always been a very rewarding experience. Whether you read academic
textbooks or entertainment books, it sure is a good investment. This is because as we grow
old particularly after reaching peak function, our minds start to slowly deteriorate if left unused.
This is why reading books help one to stay mentally active. When we read, our brains function
as we retain the information we read. In addition, reading helps us use our imagination as we
need to visualize stories inside the book. This, in turn, helps us to be mentally healthy while
being entertained at the same time.
We know that by not exercising our brain as we grow older, we become lazy. As our brains
become lazy, slowly they rot until eventually, they can be the cause of diseases such as
Parkinson’s, dementia and more. Although this is not the only cause, an unexercised brain
can be one of the many causes of these diseases.
We are fortunate as we now know that we can minimize the cause of these sicknesses.
Although this may not be 100% definite, we should still read books as it has a whole lot of
other benefits as well.
Knowledge is Power
What separates the educated from the ignorant? Their education of course! Since ancient
times, people had proven that those who know more, have more. Our great philosophers and
scientists became successful because they started with their sheer curiosity. This curiosity
leads to their thirst for knowledge as they read books and conducted experiments. Back then,
being an author of a book means that you are highly intelligent because not many can write
a book. But that doesn’t mean that authors today are not as smart because there are so
many, rather because we have become more evolved.
Today, knowledge is still priceless. Knowledge makes you more powerful simply because you
can contribute more as opposed to having little knowledge. Knowledge becomes power if you
know how to use it effectively.
So, what is the secret to becoming smarter, therefore, having more power? By making it a
habit to read books! As we read more and more books, we will naturally crave for more
information. This results in the accumulation of knowledge which can prove useful in our day
to day lives.
Being an adult is not easy. We have to deal with so many aspects of our lives which makes
us busy all the time. But we must not forget to feed our brain once in a while so that we can
receive the many benefits of reading books. But don’t forget that consistency is the key. Like
exercise, our bodies will not grow if we are not always doing it. The same goes for our brain,
exercising it is what makes us grow not only mentally but in other aspects as well.
