INTRODUCTION
 Go-kart is a simple four-wheeled, small
engine, single Seated racing car. They were
initially created in the 1950s, Post-war
period by airmen as a way to pass spare
time.
 A Go-kart, by definition, has no suspension
and no differential. They are usually raced
on scaled down tracks, but are sometimes
driven as entertainment or as a hobby by
non-professionals.
 Kart racing is generally accepted as the
most economic form of motor sport
available.
 Kart racing is usually used as a low-cost and
relatively safe way to introduce drivers to
motor racing.
HISTORY
 The first-ever go-kart was constructed by
Ingels in 1956, with the help of Lou Borelli.
They used for the build a West Bend 2-cycle
750 engine taken from a lawn mower,
slapped it on top of an incredibly simple
tubular chassis and adorned the entire
machine with semi-pneumatic tires.
 Officially, this go-kart has no name but is
known in the world of kart enthusiasts as
Kart No. 1, or The West Bend. The engine
developed only 2 horsepower, delivered to
the left rear wheel through a countershaft
constructed of bicycle chains, sprockets,
and a centrifugal clutch.
 Braking was achieved by using a pulling a
lever fitted on the right-hand side. The lever
pivoted a plate which pressed a braking pad
against a disc welded to the right rear rim.
 This first kart was rarely used in racing, but
when it drove Ingels himself to and fro, it
managed to attract a lot of interest. The
first public appearance of the model took
place the same year, at the Pomona sports
car races.
 Three Californians saw the potential of the
machine and decided to manufacture karts
on a large scale.
Basic Structure of Go Kart
METHODOLOGY
 A go-kart is a four wheeled machine that is
made up of a chassis, steering assembly, an
engine, a simple braking system and a
seat. Go-karts are usually one or two
seaters depending on the chassis used. But
the majority of professional karts are only a
single seaters.
 There are only a few components that go
into a go-kart and it is one of the simplest
four wheel machines out there – we’ll soon
see why.
 Chassis
The most important part of a go-kart is the
chassis. Most karts out there are made out
of steel tubing and there are many different
designs for go-karts. Complicated chassis
designs are mainly used for professional
racing, while personal and rental karts seem
to have a much less complicated design.
The chassis of a go-kart is usually an open
design, where there is no roof and the
driver’s seat is positioned in the middle of
the car.
 Seats
The seats of a go-kart are in a fixed position,
depending on the chassis design. The seats
are made out of fiberglass and are not
adjustable, so finding the right cart for your
body size does matter, especially when you
are going to spend 10 minutes sitting on it!
 Electric Motor
 Steering
The steering mechanism used in a go-kart is
called a wagon-styled steering system. The
steering is attached to the front axle so that
when the wheel is turned, the kart’s wheels
will change the angle that they are facing. It
is a simple mechanism and works well on a
go-kart.
 Wheels & Tires
Go-kart wheels are usually made out of
aluminum and measure at 5 inches wide.
Their tires are smaller compared to a car
tire. Go-kart tires are made of a softer
rubber compound which is only suitable for
track usage. For outdoor carting, there are
also wet tires for wet road conditions, as
dry tires are very slippery on a wet track.
LITERATURE SURVEY
 The first-ever go-kart was constructed by
Ingels in 1956, with the help of Lou Borelli.
They used for the build a West Bend 2-cycle
750 engine taken from a lawn mower,
slapped it on top of an incredibly simple
tubular chassis and adorned the entire
machine with semi-pneumatic tires.
 Koustubh Hajare et al. Studied that the
designing of chassis for go-kart can develop
many skills. The learning of 3-D modeling
soft ware’s like Solid works are essential to
obtain desire design.
ADVANTAGES
 Easier to Start
 Safer
 Environmentally Friendlier
 Noise
 Maintenance
 Performance

APPLICATION
 Modes of transportation
 Racing purpose
 Fun purpose
Future scope and improvement
 Modification of the current go kart can be
done to participate in future design and
fabrication projects and challenges.
 The practical knowledge gained can be
utilized for future research on automobile
and race engine design.
 Ball bearing can be fitted in the split axle to
give more differential to the two tires.
 Paddle shifts can be used in place of manual
gear shifting for ease of use.
 Conventional engine can be replaced by a
bio-fuel or an integrated fuel and electric
engine (hybrid engine) to minimize
environmental pollution and low cost.
 Enhanced composite materials can be used
for weight reduction leading to a better
control, stability and pickup.

PHASE 2
Work In progress
The following work has been divided into 2 steps
1) FABRICATION
2) ASSEMBLY
FABRICATION
These are the following steps undertaken in
the fabrication of the Go-kart.
1) CHASSIS :

First of all the chassis is constructed. The

MS (mild steel) pipe is taken as per dimensions and
bends in required places using bending machine. The
pipes are welded rigid.
MATERIAL: MILD STEEL
LENGTH : 5ft = 1.524m
WIDTH : 3.15ft = 0.96012m
2) AXLE:

The required shaft is taken as per the

dimensions and turned on the lathe.
3) SPROCKET:
The sprocket is welded on the axle at
required place
4) BRAKE:
The brake is also placed in the axle in the
left side. The boredom is connected to it and is
connected to left pedal in front of kart.
5) ACCELERATOR:
The accelerator pedal is placed on the
right side of the front of the kart and is connected to
the motor.

6) BATTERY:
The battery is mounted on the chassis
and is connected to motor using wires. Following are
the specifications of the battery:
BATTERY: 24V (12V each)
OUTPUT: 2A (4 hrs. chargeable battery)

7) MOTOR:
The motor is used to rotate the axle.
Following are the specifications for the motor:
MOT0R: 24V
SPEED: 120 rpm
POWER: 300W
8) STEERING:
The steering spindle and steering are
used as per dimensions and bolted together. This is
connected to the plate and link mechanism. This
mechanism is connected to the 2 front wheels. The
steering mechanism which is used in this is of Maruti
800.
9) TYRES:
The wheels are connected to the ends
of the axle and bolted together .The TYRES which is
used in this is of Maruti 800. Following is the specs
for the wheels:
DIAMETER: 17 inch = 0.4318 m
WIDTH : 4 inch = 0.1016 m
10) SEAT:
First the seat is mounted on seat stand
using bolts and the seat is opted on the chassis.
SEAT MATERIAL: WOOD AND IRON.

ASSEMBLY:
 The battery is mounted on the chassis in
such a way that balance is maintained.
 The motor is also mounted on the chassis
and connected to the battery with the help
of wires.
 The steering mechanism is mounted to the
frame and essential connections been made
to avoid confusion.
 The wheels are mounted to the axle with the
help of bushed bearings.
 The brakes have been installed for safety.
 The sprocket and motor has been connected
with the help of a V-belt for transmissions.
