IS “YAHWEH” ONLY A TITLE?

Is this a valid question? Today many scholars are trying to find

proof or better proof to confirm Yahweh as omnipresent, omniscient
and the only senior God in an effort to prove the Israelite nation did
not, and still do not believe in more than one God (Polytheism).

In their efforts they also bring Jesus into this debate or search as
being ‘one’ with Yahweh, but is he? It has been established from
scripture that Yahweh appointed gods for all the other nations but
kept Israel as his sole or chosen nation and that He is their God and
they will always be his chosen people.

From the above it then becomes clear that “other” nations have
permission to worship other gods and is therefore not committing
sin in doing so, allowing that their gods answer to Yahweh.

Recently I read an explanation regarding the above, and in this

explanation Jesus was mentioned as being the son in relation to
Yahweh. The ref used was from the book of John where Jesus stated
in chapter 17 verse 21; “May they be in us, just as you are in me
and I am in you”. Other references from various other New and Old
Testament books were also used, the reference I use is only one of
many. An important connection to scholars is a prediction in the
book of Isaiah in the Old Testament, Isaiah chapter 7 from verse 10
onwards a description of ‘Immanuel’ who will become the saviour
of Israel, plus various other predictions in the book of Isaiah.

The conclusion the researchers came to was that Jesus must then be
the son of Yahweh and looking at the Father Son and Holy Spirit
concept that these three are then in fact ‘one’, omnipresent and
omniscient.

Should one keep to the ‘rule’ of accepting and taking what religion
states as being the ‘manner’ in which religion should be regarded

1
and studied, this conclusion would then be acceptable and
unquestionable.

The Bible and other religious scriptures have however been written
by people like you and me with the intention to create followers and
convince those followers that the scriptures they present are holy
and from their specific god’s who used certain people as mediums
or prophets to convey their messages. Most religions tend to have a
heaven and hell, where the followers will eventually end up
depending on how they reacted to the teachings of the priests etc.
We being human and sceptic tend to look for proof on these kind of
teachings, the preachers and religious academics have since the
beginning of time worked together to convince this world about the
validity of their holy scriptures.

Over the past millennia millions have been killed due to this effort
by the religious to convince the sceptics to also believe, and in the
process making their gods look all the more like vicious dictators.

The Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions are the three religions
closest to one another, in the Christian religion the Old Testament
compare to the other two religions. We will look at Yahweh in
relation to these three perspectives. In the Torah, and in the Old
Testament of the Bible Yahweh is the name being used for the
Senior God, in the Quran Allah is the name used, and agreed upon
by most scholars to be Yahweh.

But has Yahweh been the same entity throughout history, and is it
possible that the entity could have changed from time to time but
kept the title, namely “Yahweh”?

If we look at Genesis chapter one, we find that God made man last,
in verse 26 this is stated; “And now ‘we’ (plural) will make human
beings; they will be like ‘us’ (plural) and resemble ‘us’ (plural).
‘They’ (plural) will have power over the fish, the birds, and all
animals, domestic and wild, large and small. 27 So God created
human beings, making them to be like ‘Himself’, (singular!). He
created them male and female”.

2
In these two verses right at the start of religion we find a
discrepancy already. The sceptics will ask the question; was it one
or many gods who created us, what should we believe?

In Genesis chapter 2 verse 5 we find that earth existed but no plants

or animals, in verse 6 the Lord God made man then in verse 18 the
Lord decided to make companions for man, and made animals and
birds and got man to name them. In verse 8 in Eden the Lord made
a garden with plants etc. Then in verse 21 and 22 The Lord made a
female companion for man.

Another discrepancy! In Genesis chapter one man was made last, in

chapter two, man was made first, then plants, then animals, and last
a female companion for man. Which description is right, what must
we take as accurate? According to religion scripture is holy and we
must believe everything in it! In these two chapters a singular
Yahweh is already suspect, in chapter one we have many gods and
then one verse later a singular God, but a different creation than the
one in chapter two!

The first time we find anything regarding offerings in the Bible is in

Genesis chapter 4 verse three where Cain gave some of his harvest
to God as an offering, in verse 4 Abel gave a first born lamb as
offering, this was pleasing to the Lord but he rejected Cain’s
offering.

Much later in Exodus we read in chapter 29 verse 38 to 46 how the

Lord gave instructions to Moses regarding the daily offerings, I will
quote verse 41 and 42; 41 “Sacrifice the second lamb in the evening,
and offer with it the same amounts of flour, olive oil, and wine as in
the morning. This is a food offering to me, the Lord, and its odour
pleases me” (note the character in relation to what was said to
Abel). 42 “For all time to come, this burnt offering is to be offered
in my presence, at the entrance of the Tent of my presence”.

Note of interest: ( It is not stated whether offerings were originally

instructed by God in Genesis or whether it was the initiative of man

3
to honour their Gods in this manner, Cain were the first according
to the Bible who did this, then Abel followed; and God were pleased
with Abel’s offering!). Take into consideration that the above took
place in pre history according to the Bible, in plus minus 5000 to
3000 B.C.

Let me go much further, and to a much later period in religious

history, to approximately 800 B.C roughly 4200 years after Adam,
according to religious history.

In the book of Isaiah chapter 1 verse 11 to 13 we read this; stated by

the Lord (Yahweh). “Do you think I want all these Sacrifices you
keep offering to me? I have had more than enough of the sheep you
burn as sacrifices and of the fat of your fine animals. I am tired of
the blood of your bulls and sheep and goats. 12 Who asked you to
bring all this when you come to worship me? Who asked you to do
all this tramping about in my temple? 13 It is useless to bring your
offerings.”

In these verses Yahweh asked who told the people to do this. Here
he does not know! And he wants to know who told them! Stating
that it is useless, yet in Exodus some 4200 years earlier he gave the
command!

In the book of Jeremiah plus minus 600 B.C, 4400 years after Adam
and two hundred years after Isaiah, in chapter 7 verse 21 and 22 the
Lord (Yahweh) states the following; 21 “My people, some sacrifices
you burn completely on the altar, and some you are permitted to
eat. But what I, the Lord say, is that you might as well eat them all.
22 I gave your ancestors ‘no command’ about burnt offerings or any
other kinds of sacrifices when I brought them out of Egypt.”

Here we have a denial from Yahweh stating clearly that he did not
give the command to bring offerings!

Three incidents, three different statements, how many different

entities have carried the name Yahweh?

4
1. We have one who gave the command and who were pleased with
the result, in plus minus 1400 B.C. This could have been the same
one who received the first offers from Cain and Abel in plus minus
5000 B.C and with this in mind gave the orders to Moses.
2 We have one who wanted to know who gave the command, and
stated in no uncertain terms that he greatly disliked the whole idea,
in plus minus 800 B.C.
3 We have one who couldn’t care less, and told the people to eat it
all, and denied categorically that he gave the command, in plus
minus 600 B.C. This one admits that he led the people out of Egypt
and with this gave an inclination that he knew about the command,
but it was not given by him, was he perhaps a junior at that stage or
did he just do his homework? If this one was indeed another entity
then the possibility exists that the previous one could have been
voted out by the Divine Council.

Should one believe any of it? Why this question, you might ask.

If Yahweh was omnipresent and omniscient he would have known

who gave the order in the first place, and would most definitely
have given an answer to that effect, which brings us to Jesus!

In the book of Matthew chapter 10 verse 29 we read this; “yet not

one sparrow fall to the ground without your fathers consent” an
indication of omniscience and omnipresence. While preaching in the
temple Jesus stated this; John chapter 8 verse 19 to 20-“Where is
your Father? They asked him. You know neither me nor my Father,
Jesus answered. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus said this as he taught in the temple.

In the same chapter verse 40 another debate started; “all I have

ever done is to tell you the truth I heard from God, yet you are
trying to kill me. Abraham did nothing like this! 41 You are doing
what your father did.” (Statement by Jesus) Then the people
answered- ‘God himself is the only Father we have’, they answered,
‘and we are his only true sons’. Then Jesus replied; 42 ‘if God really
were your father, you would love me, because I am from God and
now I am here. I am not here on my own authority but he sent me.

5
43 Jesus then said; ‘why do you not understand what I say? It is
because you cannot bear to listen to my message. 44 You are the
children of your father; the Devil, and you want to listen to your
father’s desires. From the very beginning he was a murderer and
has never been on the side of truth, because there is no truth in
him.’

In the book of Matthew chapter 23 verse 29 to verse 36 Jesus came

down on the Pharisees and law teachers, giving them a piece of his
mind. In verse 35 and 36 he mentioned that the ‘people’ killed some
of the prophets he had sent including the innocent Abel, and also
Zachariah who was killed between the altar and the temple.

This is interesting! Nowhere in the book of Genesis was it

mentioned that Abel was a prophet, he was killed by his brother
Cain, due to jealousy; is the story we read. What is rather strange is
the fact that the Lord gave Cain a mark so that no one should kill
him, and this Lord told Cain where to go to make a new start,
strange indeed, blessing the murderer!

Zechariah; in chapter 13 of the Old Testament book with the same

name we find that the Lord Almighty gave the order to kill this
prophet! Strange, perhaps, but in tune to the killing in the rest of
the Old Testament, was Jesus wrong in calling the peoples father a
murderer and liar? The Father/Yahweh who must according to
scholars be his Father and omnipresent and omniscient now seem
like a murderer and a liar, he did say “sword, kill the
prophet/shepherd who work for me in order to scatter the sheep”.

Was this what Jesus referred to in John chapter 10 in the parable of

the good shepherd?

The following statements by Jesus are also very thought provoking.

(You killed Abel, a prophet!). (You killed Zechariah between the
altar and the temple!). Nowhere else in the Bible is anything
mentioned regarding where Zechariah was murdered and nothing
is mentioned regarding Abel being a prophet, was this a fluke by the

6
scribes or did they get the info from their informers and wrote it
down without checking the impact it would have later?

We might never know, but combined with what we have mentioned

in this article it does not make a good case for Yahweh, it does
however indicate that Jesus could have been omniscient and
omnipresent, which confirm what Paul stated in Hebrews chapter 1
verse 10.

These are just a few short pages with questions and quotes
regarding the validity of Yahweh as ultimate creator of all we know,
is He? Or was Jesus trying to tell us to look deeper, to investigate
more, to open our ears and eyes to the possibility that our creator is
not what we have been taught? Should one take what Jesus stated in
Matthew chapter 23 verse 29 to 36, John chapter 8 verse 19, John
chapter 8 verse 37 to 48, and John chapter 10 (The parable of the
Shepherd) then it is quite possible that his Father is someone we do
not know, and perhaps we should investigate from a different
perspective.
