DEAD: Drugs End All Dreams
'I am Meth' is such a literally overwhelming poem penned by a little girl Judy West during her
rehab in jail following a treacherous life addicted to drugs. She was found deceased few days
after writing this poem, with a needle still in her arm.
The poem emphasizes the dark side of drugs and the need of the hour to rise against it.
Drug addiction is one of the most talked about social evils in this century. Adolescents are seen
with increasing addiction to drugs. The main reason with increasing concern is peer pressure.
There are direct and indirect pressure that might influence a person's decision in using drugs.
Direct pressure might be when a person is offered to try drugs. Indirect pressure might be when
a person is around people using drugs and sees that there is nothing wrong with using it.
Adolescents who use drugs seek out peers who also use and, in turn, are influenced by those
peers. A person might also try drugs just to fit in a social group, even if the person had no
intentions of using drugs. There are many more reasons for addiction such as emotional stress
following bereavement, maybe losing a job or fear of failure. Whatever the reason is people tend
to drugs just to comfort themselves from the evils of the society. They seek for a different world
free from problems, uncertainties and difficulties. The real question is , do they finally find the
peace of mind they seek?
Drug abuse has many consequences. There are short term, long term, direct and indirect
effects.
Short-term effects can range from changes in appetite, wakefulness, heart rate, blood pressure,
and/or mood to heart attack, stroke, psychosis, overdose, and even death.
Long-term effects can include heart or lung disease, cancer, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis,
and others. It can cause changes in brain chemical systems and circuits as well, affecting
functions that include:
learning
judgment
decision-making
stress
memory
behavior
It is said ' Hate the disease, not the addict'. Drug addicts are no less in our society. But there is
no use in ignoring them. They made a mistake by falling into the trap. It really takes more than a
strong will to come back, but it is not impossible. We have thousands of examples of people
who have successfully come back from addiction and lead a great career. Music virtuoso
Eminem and Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr are great examples. Even though the best
medicine is abstinence, it is never too late to choose rehab. Lets pledge to build a society free
from drug obsession.
