Mahatma Gandhi

Vanakam and Good evening to the respected Judges, Teachers,

Parents and my dear friends.
From the attire I wearing now, I believe that everyone
knows who am I going talk about. Yes! I am going to talk
about one of the famous person in this world. He was called
by the people ‘Mahatma’ which means great soul. The people also called
him ‘Bapu’ the father.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is one of the most influential and
iconic leaders in the history of India and mankind. He is also
known as the architect of Nonviolence movement which later
inspired and influenced the whole world. Fondly called Bapuji, he
played an instrumental role in gaining India’s Independence from
the British in 1947.

Born to Karamchand Gandhiji and Putlibai Gandhi on 2 October

1869, Gandhiji did his initial schoolings and passed matriculation
from Gujarat and went to England to pursue his studies in law. He
later went to South Africa to practice law and quickly realized the
shocking social situations in South Africa and the issues related to
social discrimination and apartheid. While continue to practice
law in South Africa ,In 1906, Gandhi organized his first mass civil-
disobedience campaign, which he called Satyagraha, in reaction to
the government’s new restrictions on the rights of Indians in
South Africa. In 1914 , He returned to India, where movements for
independence from British was already initiated by several great
leaders across the country. Gandhiji took the key leadership role
and spearheaded the freedom movement which was well
supported by other leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose, Nehru,
Sardar Patel etc. He masterminded several nonviolent campaigns
against the British like the Salt Satyagraha, Civil disobedient
movement, Quit India movement etc which gained mass support
across India. The culmination of these massive people movement
resulted in the decision of the British to quit India in 1947. As a
mark of respect Gandhiji was called Mahatma by Ravindranath
Tagore and was given the honorary title ‘Father of the Nation’.
He could not continue his life after the independence of India in
1947 as he was assassinated by one of the Hindu activists,
Nathuram Godse in 1948 on 30th of January. He was the great
personality who served his whole life till death for the
motherland. He enlightened our life with the true light of freedom
from British rule. He proved that everything is possible with the
non-violence and unity of people. Even after getting died many
years ago, he is still alive in the heart of every Indian as a “Father
of the Nation and Bapu”.
JaiHind!!!

Thank you.
