This document describes a minor project to design and build an automatic paper cutting machine using a Geneva mechanism. The objective is to cut paper into accurate, equal dimensions quickly without manual marking. It will use a Geneva wheel to convert continuous motion to intermittent motion, moving the paper between cutting periods. A crank and lever mechanism will connect to the cutter via a link to provide an oscillating cutting motion. Components will include the Geneva wheel, sprocket, roller chain, cutting blade, springs and shafts. The working principle is that rotating the crank turns the Geneva wheel, which engages the sprocket and lever at intervals to open and close the cutter against the fed paper efficiently.

ABSTRACT The design and fabrication of paper cutting machine using Geneva mechanism is useful to cut paper in equal and accurate dimension. Geneva drive is an indexing mechanism that convert continuous motion into intermittent motion, due to which paper is moved between the equal intervals of cutting periods then the paper cutting is achieved by crank and lever mechanism. The cutter will be back to its original position by lever crank mechanism. The objective of this concept is to design the Geneva mechanism operated paper cutting machine which eliminates the most time taking process of paper marking and helps in feed equal dimension of paper in each rotation this machine is used to produce the manual work of paper cutting and also time saving. This machine is very useful for paper manufacturing industry also we can avoid the human errors and also we can use this equipment also in school, college, stationary shops, paper stores.
Keyword: - Geneva mechanism, lever crank mechanism,
paper cutter, paper roller, sprocket. OBJECTIVE 1. To cut the paper in accurate and equal dimension.
2. To reduce the time for marking the
dimension In paper.
3. To get the paper cutting in low cost.
4. To design the machine in compact size. CONTENT MECHANISM 1. Geneva wheel mechanism
The Geneva mechanism is used here to get
intermittent motion. This Geneva mechanism is also called as indexing mechanism.
2. Crank and lever mechanism
Here the sprocket (crank) is connected to lever
(cutter) by a connecting link (string). When the crank rotates this rotation is converted into oscillating motion hence the cutter gets oscillating motion to cut the paper. COMPONENT 1. Geneva Wheel 2. Sprocket 3. Roller chain 4. Paper cutting 5. Coil spring 6. Shaft 7. Paper roller In our Geneva, the driven wheel has four slots and thus advances one step 0f 90º for each rotation of drive wheel. Hence the intermittent motion is achieved for ¼ 1/4 of 360º.
A Sprocket or Sprocket wheel Is a profiled wheel
with teeth, cogs or even sprocket that mesh with chain. The sprockets are used for power transmission between two shafts through the roller chain.
Roller chain is a type of the chain drive most
commonly used for transmission of mechanical power between two sprockets. It consists of series of short cylindrical rollers held together with side links. It is driven by a toothed wheel called a sprocket.
A Paper cutter is a tool, design to cut the
paper with a straight edge. Paper cutter varies in size. This paper cutter is used as a oscillator in the 4 bar crank and lever mechanism.
A Coil spring also known as helical spring, is
a mechanical element, which is typically used to store energy and subsequently release it. This coil spring is used to bring the cutter to its original position.
A Shaft is rotating machine element which is
used to transmit power from one place to another. This shaft forms a integral parts of a the machine itself. The crankshaft is an example of machine shaft.
A Paper roller is an element which is used to
roll the paper while the intermittent motion. The paper roller is used to feed the paper without any damage. WORKING PRINCIPLE The handle is fixed to the crank. If the handle is rotated ,
1. When the cam pin is in extreme right position i.e.
engage position the crankshaft will be at extreme bottom position. Hence the cutter is in full open position and spring will be in rest position. 2. When the cam pin is in extreme bottom position i.e. disengage position, the crankshaft will be at extreme left position. Hence the cutter is in partial cutting position and the spring will be in partial tension. 3. When the cam pin is in extreme left position i.e. Disengage position, the crankshaft will be at extreme top position. Hence the cutter is in full cutting position and the spring will be in full tension. 4. When the cam pin is in extreme top position i.e. Disengage position, The crankshaft will be in extreme right position. Hence the cutter is in partial cutting position and the spring will be in partial tension.
Thus the paper cutting is achieved by above 4 processes
