Tutorial I – Fuzzy Sets
Part A
1. Define a fuzzy set with an example.
2. Define and distinguish between α − cut and strong α − cut of a fuzzy set. Is α − cut a
fuzzy set or a crisp set?
3. Describe the support of a fuzzy set.
4. What do you mean by the height of a fuzzy set?
5. What is the relation between a crisp set and a fuzzy set?
6. Distinguish between normal and subnormal fuzzy sets.
7. What is the height of the fuzzy set A=0/1 + 0.3/2 + 0.5/3 + 0.6/4 + 1/5 on the universal
set X={1, 2, 3, 4, 5}? Is it a normal fuzzy set?
8. Define core of a fuzzy set.
9. Define level set of a fuzzy set.
10. Identify the level set and the 0.8-cut of the fuzzy set A given in problem 7.
11. Describe complement of a fuzzy set with an example.
12. Discuss equilibrium points of a fuzzy set.
13. Define convexity in fuzzy sets.
Part B
14. How will you define union and intersection of two fuzzy sets? Discuss with examples.
15. How scalar cardinality of a fuzzy set is defined? Discuss with example.
16. What do you mean by fuzzy subsets? Discuss with example.
17. What is degree of subset-hood in fuzzy set theory? Explain with example.
18. Consider the fuzzy sets A=0/1 + 0.5/2 + 0.7/3 + 0.4/4 + 1/5 and B=0.7/1 + 0.8/2 + 1/3 +
0.4/4 + 0.5/5 on the universal set X={1, 2, 3, 4, 5}. Compute the degree of subset hood
of A in B as well as B in A.
19. Describe the difference and symmetric difference of two fuzzy sets and give examples.
20. Describe decomposition of a fuzzy set by means of an example.
21. Consider the fuzzy sets Very low, Low, Medium, High and Very high given below.

Identify the supports of all the fuzzy sets. Construct the mathematical formulae for all
the fuzzy sets given above.

22. Consider the fuzzy sets A, B & C defined on the interval X=[0, 10] of real numbers by
x 1
the membership grade functions A( x) = , B ( x) = 2 − x & C ( x ) = .
x+2 1 + 10( x − 2) 2
i) Draw the graphs of the fuzzy sets A, B & C
ii) Identify A , B & C mathematically
iii) Identify A ∪ B, A ∪ C & B ∪ C (graphically)
iv) Identify A ∩ B, A ∩ C & B ∩ C (graphically)
v) Supports of A, B and C
vi) Heights of A, B and C
vii) Check whether A, B & C normal fuzzy sets
viii) Identify the level sets of A, B & C
ix) Check whether A, B & C convex fuzzy sets
x) Identify the equilibrium points of A, B & C
xi) Check whether or not A ⊆ B; B ⊆ A; A ⊆ C ; C ⊆ A; B ⊆ C ; C ⊆ B
xii) Calculate the α − cuts and strong α − cuts of A, B & C for
α = {0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.8, 1}
23. Order the fuzzy sets defined by the following membership grade functions(assuming
x ≥ 0 ) by the inclusion(subset) relation.

Also represent A, B & C graphically.
24. State first and third decomposition theorems and illustrate with examples.
25. Define extension principle in fuzzy sets and give an example.
26. Consider the universal set X={0, 1, 2,………10}. Suppose the fuzzy sets A, B and C are
defined on X as below:
x 1
A( x) = ; B ( x) = 2− x ; C ( x) = , ∀x ∈ X . Let f : X → Y be defined
x+2 1 + 10( x − 2) 2
by f ( x) = x, ∀x ∈ X where Y={0, 1, 4, 9, 16,………100}. Using extension principle,
