Define boiler efficiency. In theoretical terms, draw a typical heat balance sheet of a boiler.

The overall volume expansion ratio of a carnot cycle working in temperature limits of
600 K and 300 K, is 18. Determine
(a) the volume ratios of the isothermal and adiabatic processes
(b) the thermal efficiency of the cycle. Take  = 1.4.

Describe the apparatus that is commonly used for the analysis of dry exhaust gases.
Discuss the probable sources of error in such an analysis.
A boiler burns coal of the following composition: C = 88%, H 2 = 3.8%, O2 = 2.2% and
the remainder ash. On a particular occasion the percentage of CO 2 passing up the
chimney was 10%. The temperature of chimney gases was then 250C. If a sample of this
gas is analysed by the Orsat apparatus at room temperature, which percentage of CO 2
would you expect, assuming complete combustion of the fuel.

An oil engine has a volume of 60 litres and a compression ratio of 14.2 to 1. At the
beginning of the compression stroke the pressure and temperature are 1 kgf/cm2 and 80C
respectively. At the end of compression the pressure is 30 kgf/cm3. The charge is now
heated at constant pressure until the volume is doubled. Find: (a) the index of
compression, (b) the temperature at the end of compression, (c) the heat transfer, (d) the
heat received in constant pressure operation.

A steam engine consumes 13.3 Mg of steam per hour when developing an indicated
power of 1.5 MW, and 18.7 Mg/h when the ip is 2.25 MW. Estimate willams’ law for this
engine and find the steam consumption in Mg per hour and the specific consumption in
kg/k W.h when developing 2000 kW.

The steam drum of a water-tube boiler has hemispherical ends, the diameter is 1.22 m and
the overall length is 6m. Under steaming conditions the temperature of the shell before
lagging was 230C and the temperature of the surrounds was 51C. The temperature of
the cleading after lagging was 69C and the surrounds 27C. Assuming 75% of the total
shell area to be lagged and taking the radiation constant as 5-67 x 10 1.1 kJ/m2Ka, estimate
the saving in heat energy per hour due to lagging.

A mass of 1600 kg is lifted by winch through a height of 25 m in 30 seconds. Calculate

(i) the workdone and if the efficiency of the winch is 60%, find (ii) the input power in kW
and (iii) the energy consumed in kWh.

Air is compressed in a cylinder according to the law pVn = a constant. The initial
condition of the air is 0.125 m3, 1.01 bar and 19°C, and the final condition is 36 bar and
508'C. Taking cp = 1.005 kJ/kg K and cv = 0.718 kJ/kg K, calculate (i) the index of
compression, (ii) the mass of air compressed, (iii) the work done during compression,
(iv) the change of internal energy, (v) the transfer of heat to or from the air.

A two-stroke engine develops an indicated power of 2700 kW, the specific fuel
consumption is 0.225 kg/kWh (indicated), and 18 kg of air is supplied per kg of fuel
burned. The exhaust gases pass through an exhaust gas boiler, entering at 327°C and
leaving at 215°C. Steam is generated in the boiler at 15 bar, 0.96 dry, from feed water at
50°C. If the efficiency of the boiler is 0.8, calculate the mass of steam generated per
hour, taking the specific heat of the gases as 1.05 kJ/kg K.
