Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
INTRODUCTION STRATEGY
The 630 Series (631, 637) with the C18 & C9 engines with ACERT Technology will be
available for sale in all geographic areas with a first production date of September 1, 2005.

APPLICATIONS, MARKETS & COMPETITION

The 630G-series features engines with ACERT Technology which are EPA Tier 3 and European
Union Stage III compliant. ACERT Technology is a series of Caterpillar innovations that work at
the point of combustion to optimize engine performance as well as reduce engine emissions. All
of these improvements will enhance the productivity of the 630 G-series as well as maintain its
competitiveness with other hauling units on a cost per yard basis.

The 630G’s will be used by medium to large sized contractors as a primary hauling unit in
aggregate, heavy construction and mining applications. The primary loading tool for the 631G
will be a track type tractor, e.g., D9 or D10, in the 110,000-150,000 lb. (49 895-68 038 kg)
weight class. The larger TTT offers quicker loading times with denser loads than the smaller
TTT.

The 637G is a tandem engine machine that can self-load on level ground and reach 85% of its
rated load. On a favorable grade of 5% or greater, the 637G can self-load and obtain 100% of its
rated load.
There are three types of self-loading machines: the 631G auger, the 637G auger and the 637G
push-pull system. Self-loading machines eliminate bunching in that they don’t have to wait for a
dozer to assist them in loading. In addition, self loading machines typically realize lower cost per
yard (meter) as compared to push loaded systems.
The auger attachment conditions the material and helps eliminate voids in the material which
results in consistent payloads. The material appetite of the auger is such that it can handle
anything from loose material to rock. During loading the auger produces significantly less dust
than an elevator scraper in that the auger loads from the bottom to the top where as an elevator
loads from the top to the bottom.
Primary 630G applications will call for hauling material between 1,000 and 5,000 feet (300 and
1,500 meters) one way. Typical materials include dirt, rock, clay, sand, gravel, or a variety of
combinations of each. Underfoot conditions will vary from low rolling resistance (2-3%) to
medium (10%) with grades ranging from 0-20%. The combination of grade and rolling
resistance (total resistance) will normally not exceed 30%
Direct competition is limited to the Terex TS24D while indirect competition is the entire hauling
spectrum ranging from agricultural tractors pulling towed scrapers to off-highway trucks. The
primary competition for the 630G's (based on productivity) is 30 to 40 ton articulated trucks
loaded by hydraulic excavators or wheel loaders.

G Update Enhancements
Engines with ACERT Technology
The C18 and the C9 electronic engines with ACERT
Technology meet Tier 3/Stage IIIa emission regulations.
ACERT Technology reduces emissions during the
combustion process by using advanced technology in the air
and fuel systems, in conjunction with integrated electronics.
Caterpillar meets emission regulations at the combustion
source rather than recycling exhaust gases.

In addition, oil service intervals have been extended to 500

hours with the use of oil sampling.

NGMR Engine Cooling System

(Next Generation Modular Radiator)
The standard radiator for the tractor is the NGMR radiator which
features 9 fins per inch whereas the previous model had a standard
radiator of 33 fins per inch.

The scraper has a brazed aluminum core scraper radiator with

composite tanks which features 9 fins per inch. With the increased
radiator fin spacing for both the tractor and the scraper, clogging in
severe applications has been reduced.

Implement Valve Relocation

The implement valve has been relocated from the
tractor to the top of scraper draft tube. The relocation
resulted in reducing the number of hoses and tubes that
cross over the gooseneck which reduced potential leak
points. The relocation also improved access to the
implement valve for better serviceability.

One Piece Power Block

Jumpstart receptacle and disconnect switch are integrated
into one piece power block which provides better
electrical integrity and serviceability. The disconnect
switch with a lockable cover locks out all power from the
batteries as well as jumpstart functions.

Cab Improvements
Grab handle/hand rest next to joystick controller so operator has a
place to rest hand while on the haul and return roads. Trigger of the
joystick has on and off positions for the push-pull bail or the auger
models. In addition there is an actuator indicator light on the dash
which will turn on when the trigger is engaged to actuate the push-
pull bail or auger.

Scraper Electrical Harness

Ribbon wiring harness replaced the cable harness for improved wear and
durability. In addition it has increased flexibility which oscillates better with
machine. Polyurethane boots offer better protection against the elements

Serviceability
The tractor has a standard two piece door on the right side which allows
better access to service points. In addition the hood is hinged on the
front so the that the hood swings open easily with the assist of spring
struts towards the front of the machine instead of swinging to the rear on
previous models. This allows better access to those areas located on top
of the engine.

8
Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
Automatic Belt Tensioning
Both the tractor and scraper engines have automatic belt
tensioning which replaces the manual tensioning on previous
models. In addition the number of belts on the tractor has
been reduced from the previous five belts to two and on the
scraper the number of belts has been reduced from four to
two. With the Tier 3/Stage IIIa machines, fan drive bearings
both the tractor and scraper engines require no servicing
whereas the previous bearings required servicing at 250 hour
intervals.

Productivity
Wheel tractor-scrapers have a proven history of longevity and the 630G-Series machines are no
exception. They continue the tradition of offering higher availability, at a lower cost per yard
than the competition while providing the reliability and durability that our customers depend on
and demand.

The 630G-Series scrapers were designed for fast, easy servicing. Engine access points are on the
right hand side as well as the majority of service points which simplifies routine maintenance.

Production is affected by the machines capability to haul material quickly. On the tandem engine
scraper, the rear engine has dual horsepower capability which results in better performance on
the haul roads.

The 630G-Series continues the tradition of providing cost effective hauling solutions to
customers’ requirements. By providing a full range of scrapers, customers can choose the correct
system that will provide them with the low cost per yard solution.

OPERATOR STATION
Joystick Controller
The three implement levers (bowl, apron, ejector) have been incorporated into one joystick
controller. In addition, the cushion hitch and transmission hold buttons are also on the joystick.
Depending on the particular model, a rocker switch controls the bail (push pull) or the auger (on,
off). The operator now has control of all of the key functions without letting go of the controller.

Transmission Controller
The transmission controller has been revised to simplify gear selection (1st, 2nd, & Drive). A gear
indicator gage on the dash informs the operator of actual gear engagement ( 1st through 8th ). A
top gear selector switch is located on the side of the transmission controller which allows the
operator to select maximum top gear in which the machine will operate. This allows the operator
to match the WTS speed to job conditions as well as the speed of the fleet.

Throttle Lock Controller

A throttle lock switch enhances operation during long haul cycles by allowing the operator to
maintain a desired engine speed without maintaining pressure on the throttle.

Revised Steering Column

A new steering column design increased legroom 11% (a full 3.5 inches), and eliminates knee
contact points.

Seat
Cat Comfort Cloth Seat offers improved comfort with multi-adjustable seat and armrests. The
G-Series swivel seat locks at 0º, 10º, 20º, and 30º to provide the optimum operating position in
the cut or on the haul. The seat itself can be moved fore/aft 4 inches to accommodate different
sized operators, and the seat suspension offers 8” of vertical height adjustment as well. Static
seat belts are standard while retractable non-cinching seat belts are available as an option.

Seat Suspension
The all new seat suspension which is on all G series machines redefines the ride of scrapers. It
features a high performance air shock absorber with it’s own air compressor. There is an
attachment available which provides dual shock absorbers in the seat suspension if the operator
requires extra dampening.

Instrument Panel
A quad gauge instrument cluster monitors the engine coolant temp, transmission / torque
converter oil temp, fuel level and system air pressure as well as providing fluid level and
temperature information at a glance. On the 637 G machines, the scraper engine may be started
and stopped from the cab.

10
Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
Electronic Speedometer, Tachometer, & Gear Indicator
The speedometer indicates the ground speed in mph or km/h. A digital display provides actual
gear information as the machine is moving. An electronic tachometer monitors the tractor engine
as well as the scraper engine on 637G’s.

Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)

EMS monitors machine status and provides real time information. On 637G’s, the operator can
display either front or rear engine information in the cab. If EMS senses a fault in the scraper, it
will automatically default from the tractor to the scraper to notify the operator.

Air Conditioning / Heater

Standard air conditioning and heater enhances operator comfort. Ventilation louvers have been
relocated to optimize airflow to the operator.

Ergonomic Switch Layout

Primary controls, switches, and indicator lights have been located on the dash and right console.
Less frequently used switches have been relocated to the headliner in front of the operator.

Storage & Amenities

Convenient storage location includes space for a lunch box and first aid kit. A cup holder and
ashtray are also included.

POWER TRAIN
C18 / C9 Engines
The 630 G-Series Wheel Tractor-Scrapers are powered by the C18 (tractor) and C9 (scraper)
engines with ACERT Technology. ACERT Technology is a series of Caterpillar innovations that
work at the point of combustion to optimize engine performance. It is sometimes easier to think
of ACERT as a series of building blocks used by Caterpillar to optimize engine performance
while meeting EPA Tier 3 and European Union Stage IIIa regulations.

The building blocks of ACERT Technology are:

• Fuel delivery
• Electronic control
• Air management
• After treatment (on-highway only)

The three building blocks incorporated onto wheel tractor-scraper engines are fuel delivery
through MEUI (mechanical-actuated electronical unit injection), electronic control from the Cat
ADEM A4 controller, and air management through cross flow design of the intake manifold and
turbo charging. After treatment, the fourth building block or tool, is not needed on off-road
applications at this time.

ACERT Technology has been proving itself in on-highway trucks since March of 2003. It is
technology that allows Cat engines to meet durability and reliability expectations – without
sacrificing performance. Technologies used by other manufacturers, e.g. EGR,

11
Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
reintroduce dirty, corrosive exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber, leaving too many
questions unanswered about engine life as well as shortened service intervals. Instead, Caterpillar
chose a path of research and development on its existing technologies to arrive at a solution that
uses fuel mapping, electronic control and multiple injection fuel delivery to manage emissions.
The result is an engine that meets customer's reliability and durability expectations, as well as
positioning Caterpillar engines to meet future regulations.

ACERT Technology - Fuel Delivery

One of the breakthroughs of ACERT Technology is the concept of multiple injection fuel
delivery. This process involves a high degree of precision as the combustion process grows in
complexity as engine speeds and load demands change. One key benefit of multiple injection
technology is lower combustion chamber temperatures that in turn generates fewer emissions. In
precisely shaping the combustion cycle, Caterpillar is also optimizing thorough combustion of
the fuel, further reducing emissions output while giving customers more work for their fuel
expense.

ACERT Technology - Electronic Control

Caterpillar has been electronically controlling its engines since the middle 1980s. The
culmination of this pioneering spirit is the ADEM A4 controller which precisely manages all
engine systems. It is a 32-bit computer that uses sensors throughout the engine to
regulate fuel delivery, valve timing and all other engine systems that require input to manage
load and performance. The ADEM A4 controller is the muscle behind engine responsiveness,
self-diagnosis, fuel economy and emissions. Software offers flexibility in fuel mapping,
allowing the engine to respond to specific application needs as well as weather and altitude
conditions.

ACERT Technology – Air Management

Engines must breath clean cool air in order to perform and as such air management is key to
optimizing engine performance as well as controlling emissions. A new cross flow design in the
cylinder head facilitates air movement, while tighter tolerances between the piston and cylinder
liner reduces blow by gases.

The combination of the above three building blocks of ACERT Technology provide precise
control of the combustion process. At this point in time, off-highway engines are NOT required
to have an after treatment system. However, Caterpillar does have a Cat Diesel Oxidation
Catalyst located between the engine and muffler for on-highway truck engines to meet current
on-road engine emission regulations.

Mechanical Electronic Unit Injection (MEUI)

Both engines feature Mechanical-actuated Electronically Controlled Unit Injection (MEUI) with
variable shaped injection patterns for optimum combustion based on altitude and temperature.
The Cat MEUI fuel system is a highly evolved fuel system with a proven record of reliability in
the field. The system combines the technical advancement of an electronic control system with
the simplicity of direct mechanically controlled unit fuel injection pressure. These features allow

12
Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
the ACERT C18 and ACERT C15 to have complete control over injection timing, duration and
pressure. Electronic controls monitor altitude, as a result the machine can work up to 7,500 feet
before engine de-rating occurs.

ADEM A4 Control Module

The ADEM A4 controller utilizes advanced engine management software to monitor, control and
protect the engine. The ADEM A4 controller maintains an active electronic fault log that aids
troubleshooting. Engine speed governing doesn’t require any adjustment since it is fully
electronic. The ADEM A4 controller improves performance during cold starts and compensates
for high altitude operations and air filter plugging. Input from sensors allows the ADEM A4
controller to monitor and control injection, timing, injection pressure, engine cooling fan speed,
ether starting aid and hydraulic pumps to adjust to any operating condition.

Air-to-Air Aftercooling (ATAAC)

Reduces air inlet temperature for enhanced combustion efficiency, reduced emissions levels,
higher altitude capability, and more power.

ELECTRONIC CONTROLS
Air Filter Restrictor Indicator
ADEM A4 controller monitors air filter restriction and sends a warning message to the
Electronic Monitoring System (EMS III) to alert the operator if the restriction exceeds the
allowable limit.

Automatic Ether Injection

The ADEM A4 controller activates the ether injection system during engine cranking to enhance
cold weather starting.

Automatic Altitude Compensation

Automatic compensation for engine operation at high altitudes. The system de-rates fuel
delivery as a function of barometric pressure as sensed by the system’s atmospheric pressure
sensor. No manual adjustment is required. Auto deration prevents excessive combustion
temperatures which could result in component damage.

Diagnostics
Electronic Technician (ET) is used to display real-time pressures, temperatures, fuel settings and
diagnostic messages as well as a historical information such as engine over-speeds, overheating,
low oil pressure and air filter restriction events.

Fuel Economy
Electronic controls are expected to yield a fuel savings by optimizing the timing setting for
varying load conditions. The ADEM A4 controller matches timing to the load on the engine,
engine rpm and temperature.

13
Caterpillar 631/637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers
New Product Information Release - 2005
Greater Reliability
The MEUI system has fewer moving parts than mechanical unit injection and requires few
adjustments. The ADEM A4 controller communicates with the monitoring system (EMS) to
warn the operator when problems arise, preventing major damage from occurring.

Maintenance
MEUI engines have virtually no mechanically controlled parts to wear or adjust. These have
been replaced by electronic controls, reducing maintenance costs and increasing machine
availability.

Reduced Exhaust Smoke

Electronic sensors are read by the ADEM A4 controller to determine the optimum fuel/air ratio.
Fuel is precisely controlled during cranking, starting and acceleration to reduce smoke. The
Engine Electronics are faster and more efficient than mechanically controlling the governor rack
position.

Low Battery Elevated Idle

The ADEM A4 controller automatically compensates for low alternator output at low idle by
raising the rpm for brief intervals to keep the batteries fully charged.

and fill operations. Gears 3 – 8 operate in direct-drive for drive train efficiency during the haul.
Reverse gear operates in converter drive.

Gear selection choices are 1st, 2nd and Drive. The neutral lock thumb control must be pressed to
move the shifter from neutral. To use the top gear button, with the engine running and the
transmission shifter in “D”, the operator must hold the yellow button until the gear display on the
instrument panel indicates the desired top gear. When the desired top gear appears on the
display, the operator then releases the yellow button and the top gear is set. The top gear
selected cannot exceed what is programmed into the TCC (Transmission/Chassis Control)
controller. The transmission hold switch is incorporated into the joystick controller and allows
the operator to hold the machine in the current gear until the operation is completed (normally
cut and/or fill).

Scraper
Electronically controlled Caterpillar planetary power shift transmission with 4 forward and one
reverse speed. All gears operate in converter drive for increased torque capability. The scraper
transmission is electronically controlled by the tractor transmission which synchronizes the
scraper transmission gear selection to match that of the tractor transmission. Manual shifting of
the scraper transmission cannot be performed.

However there is a switch in the cab that allows the operator to disengage the scraper
transmission. The scraper transmission neutral/run switch is used to engage and disengage the
scraper transmission. When the operator selects the “neutral” switch position, the scraper
transmission is shifted into neutral, and remains in neutral until the operator selects the “run”
switch position, upon which normal shifting of the scraper transmission will resume.

Retarder (631G - optional: 637G - standard)

The hydraulic retarder should be used on downgrades to reduce wear on the service brakes and
enhance machine control. The retarder acts as an internal brake on the driveline that minimizes
the need to apply service brakes. The operator typically engages the retarder 3 to 4 seconds
before the machines traverses a downhill grade.

The retarder is located on the torque converter output shaft between the transmission and the
torque converter housing. As oil enters the retarder housing it flows into the vanes of the rotor.
The rotor which turns at engine speed, throws oil against the stationary stator vanes on the
retarder housing. As engine speed increases, the stator’s resistance to moving oil slows the
rotation of the rotor thus slowing the machine. Optimal retarding action occurs when the engine
is turning at rated rpm.

POWER TRAIN FEATURES
Electronic Control
Provides smooth, consistent shifts through the synchronization of engine and transmission
speeds.

Directional Shift Management

Reduces driveline torque and transmission clutch energy when directional shifts or shifts from
neutral during high engine rpm are attempted. This helps prevent excessive transmission wear
and increases drive train life. A pressure sequencing valve assures that the directional clutches
are engaged after the speed clutches, in order to absorb most of the torque load generated in
direction changes.

Control Throttle Shifting (CTS)

Automatically synchronizes engine speed

to transmission speed during shifting to
reduce power train stress and increase
component life. In addition it results in a
smoother ride for the operator.

Programmable Top Gear Selection

Allows the operator to manually set the top gear (3rd - 8th) available to match conditions or to
match the hauling speed of the fleet to specific job-site needs.

Transmission Hold
Allows the operator to maintain converter drive for increased rimpull, or hold the current gear for
enhanced control.

Neutral Coast Inhibitor

Prevents the transmission from shifting into neutral if the operator selects neutral while moving.
The transmission control will select the proper gear for the given engine rpm and ground speed.

Planetary Design
Provides larger contact area between gears than countershaft transmissions for greater load-
carrying capacity.

Differential Control
Electronic differential lock on the tractor helps prevent the drive wheels from spinning in poor
underfoot conditions. The operator engages the differential lock by choosing either the right or
left foot control that is located on the floor of the cab.

Final Drives
Outboard-mounted, planetary design final drives reduce torque loads on other drive train
components. Large-capacity, double-row roller bearings and Caterpillar Duo-Cone seals deliver
exceptional reliability in the toughest applications.

Brakes
Expanding-shoe type brakes are a cam-operated design, which are air-applied and spring
released. The secondary braking system uses independent front and rear circuits which are
automatically applied if the service air pressure drops to 55 psi (380 kPa). Audible and visual
action alert indicators inform the operator when the service air pressure drops to 75 psi (518
kPa). The push-button operated parking brake features a spring-applied, air-released mechanism
which operates the service brakes. Meet the following standards: OSHA, MSHA, ISO 3450:
1998

The standard radiator for the tractor is the NGMR
radiator which features 9 fins per inch whereas
the previous model had a standard radiator of 33
fins per inch.

The scraper has a brazed aluminum core radiator

with composite tanks which features 9 fins per
inch. With the increased radiator fin spacing for
both the tractor and the scraper, clogging in
severe applications has been reduced.

HYDRAULICS
The hydraulic system features closed, full-flow filtered hydraulic circuits powered by gear-type
and piston-type pumps.

Cushion Hitch
The electrically actuated cushion hitch incorporates a parallelogram-type linkage for exceptional
strength and delivers a smooth ride for enhanced operator comfort. Nitrogen accumulators
absorb and dampen road shocks thus preventing these loads from being transmitted to the
operator. An operator selectable lockout switch located on the joystick locks the cushion hitch
for improved control of the cutting edge during loading and dumping.

Cushion Hitch Features:

• cushion hitch lock down control for positive cutting edge down pressure when loading or
spreading
• vertically mounted hydraulic cylinder transfers road shocks to nitrogen accumulators
• controlled oil flow dampens rebound oscillation
• leveling valve automatically centers piston in cylinder for all loads
• extensive use of steel castings, eliminating many welded joints, increasing strength
• double-kingbolt design withstands high external forces and enhances installation and removal

Cutting edge may be adjusted according to job conditions. For most efficient loading, use the
thinnest edge that provides satisfactory wear life and impact resistance. A wide variety of
Ground Engaging Tools (GET) options such as standard, serrated, and abrasion resistant material
(ARM) are available to optimize scraper loading in various materials. For example, ARM
scraper cutting edges and router bits will provide up to five times the wear life of conventional
edges and router bits in high wear, low impact applications. Depending on applications, the
serrated cutting edge may be more cost effective than the integrated tooth cutting edge.

Drop Down position (stinger) provides good penetration and efficient flow of material into the
bowl for production applications.

Auger Attachment (631G & 637G)

The auger mechanism is available for the 631G and 637G. The auger has a wide material
appetite ranging from rock to free flowing material such as sand. The auger lifts material off of
the cutting edge, conditions it, and spreads it evenly in the bowl. The action of the auger
promotes conditioning of the material into uniform size which helps eliminate any voids in the
bowl, thus ensuring consistent payloads. An additional benefit of conditioning the material is
that it requires less compactive force in the fill. In applications where dust is a concern, the auger
has demonstrated that it significantly minimizes dust while loading when compared to the
elevator loading system.

Auger Features:
• wide material appetite
• blends and conditions material which promotes compaction in the fill
• reduced dust and noise during loading
• 2-speed auger motor shifts automatically from high speed to low speed to enhance loading
capability
• precise metering of material in the fill
• dual horsepower tractor engine automatically reverts to the higher setting when the auger
motor is engaged
• single hydraulic system for entire machine with separate implement pumps and valves
• scraper slip limiter switch prevents rear wheel spin during loading (637G)

New Product Information Release - 2005
Push-Pull Attachment (637G)

An optional push-pull arrangement is available for the 637G, which concentrates the combined
horsepower of two machines onto one cutting edge. The push-pull attachment allows two
individual machines to act as a self loading machine. Typically both of the push-pull machines
can load in less than a minute.

The push-pull arrangement features a hydraulically actuated bail and cushioned plate which are
bolted to the front of the tractor and a hook which is attached to the rear of the scraper. As the
lead machine enters the cut, the trailing machine lowers the bail on the hook of the first machine.
The second machine then pushes the first machine until it is loaded. At that time, the second
machine begins its loading cycle and the first machine pulls the second machine until it is
loaded. After both machines are loaded, the second machine raises its bail and disengages from
the first machine.

Push-pull scrapers are an example of self-loading scrapers which typically have low costs per
yard (meter). The push-pull attachment is recommended for applications that require a large
amount of material to be moved very quickly at low cost per bank cubic yard (bank cubic meter).

(627's demonstrating the push-pull technique)

Visibility
Hood width increased in order to accommodate the
low emission engine. The redesigned hood and
front shroud are wider to enclose the air-to-air
aftercooler (ATAAC), ether starting aid, and lights.
The hood corners are sloped to maintain visibility.
The G-Series has the same level of visibility to the
front and sides as the E-Series.

Operator Station
The 630G-Series Wheel Tractor-Scrapers benefits from a
ergonomic cab interior to deliver enhanced operator
comfort, efficiency and productivity

• The operator station features a standard Rollover

Protective Structure (ROPS) which meets SAE J320a,
SAE J1040 MAY 94, ISO 3471-1986 and ISO 3471-
1994 as well as a Falling Object Protective Structure
(FOPS) which meets SAE J231 JAN 81 and ISO 3449-
1992.
• Meets OSHA and MSHA limits for operator and
sound exposure with doors and windows closed
(according to ANSI/SAE J1166 May 90). The operator sound pressure level is less than 85
dB(A) when measured per ISO 6394 or 86/662/EEC.
• Standard air conditioning system contains environmentally friendly R134a refrigerant.

Single Lever Implement Control

Traditionally WTS’s have had three separate control
levers for the bowl, apron and ejector functions. The G
series has one joystick controller will control these three
functions. In addition the joystick will also have the
transmission hold, cushion hitch, or the bail, auger, or
elevator control functions incorporated into it. The
operator never needs to remove their hand from the
joystick while loading and unloading. The G-Series
joystick requires 25% less force to control the critical
scraper functions while requiring 40% less travel.

Simplified Transmission Control

Simplifies gear selection and provides operator-defined top gear
control. Forward gear selection choices are 1, 2, and D (Drive).
The transmission control lever was moved to accommodate the
more frequently used single-lever implement control. By relocating
the gear control to the rear position on the right hand side of the
operator’s station it increased legroom for the operator, resulting in
a more spacious cab. The neutral lock thumb control must be
pressed to move the shifter from neutral. To use the top gear
button, with the engine running and the transmission shifter in “D”,
the operator must hold the yellow button until the gear display on
instrument panel indicates the desired top gear. When the desired top gear appears on the
display, the operator then releases the yellow button and the top gear is set. The top gear
selected cannot exceed what is programmed into the electronic transmission control unit.

Cat Comfort Cloth Seat

Offers improved comfort with multi-adjustable seat and armrests.
The G-Series swivel seat locks at 0º, 10º, 20º, and 30º to provide a
flexible seating arrangement, which ensures that the joystick control
is in the proper orientation for the operator. The seat itself can be
moved fore/aft 4 inches to accommodate different sized operators,
and the seat suspension offers 8” of vertical height adjustment as
well.

Revised Steering Column

Increases legroom 11% (a full 3.5 inches), and eliminates knee
contact points.

Instrument Panel
Features a quad gauge layout showing engine coolant temp,
transmission / torque converter oil temp, fuel level, and
system air pressure. For 637G tandem engine machines, the
tachometer is selectable to enable in-cab monitoring of front
and rear engine speeds. Once the tractor engine has been
started on the 637G, the operator can then start the rear engine
from the cab. Previously it was necessary to exit the cab and
physically start the scraper engine from the rear of the machine. The electronic monitoring
system (EMS) can display both front and rear engine information right in the cab.

Standard Air Conditioning / Heater

Gives the operator a comfortable workstation in any kind of weather. Ventilation louvers have
been relocated for improved airflow to the operator.

Logical Control Placement

Enhances convenience by placing the frequently used switches
and indicator lights on the instrument panel, and less frequently
used switches on the overhead console. Pictured is the overhead
console which has space for two radios.

Engine Throttle Lock

Allows the operator to maintain a given engine speed without using
the throttle pedal. This eliminates operator fatigue associated with
holding the throttle pedal down for extended periods of time. An
alternate-action on/off rocker switch is used to enable the Throttle
Lock feature. A lamp indicates the feature is active. The Throttle
Lock feature is disabled by moving the rocker switch to the off
position, or by activating the service brakes or the retarder.

Convenient Storage Locations

The cab has been redesigned to provide space for a lunch box, a
first aid kit, cup holder, and ashtray.

Electro-Hydraulic Implement Control

Simplifies serviceability by removing the cab
pilot valve and associated lines from the cab,
which also reduces noise. The high efficiency
electro-hydraulic pilot oil filter provides cleaner
oil for the pilot system.

The relocation resulted in reducing the number

of hoses and tubes that cross over the gooseneck
which reduced potential leak points. The
relocation also improved access to the
implement valve for better serviceability.

ELECTRONIC MONITORING SYSTEM

Monitors machine status and provides real-time information to the operator including warnings
of problems identified by the electronic control modules (ECM’s).

Easy Access Diagnostics

Diagnostic codes are accessible through the EMS main display module, via the Electronic
Technician (ET). This offers a head start on problem solving, with a radio call often providing
the service technician with the knowledge of which tools, troubleshooting guides, and possibly
even replacement parts to bring to the machine.

Event Log
EMS has a large amount of memory to record problems detected by the control system. Included
in the log is the service meter unit (hour) the event occurred, the number of occurrences for the
event, an event identifier and problem code. The event log can be accessed using the Electronic
Technician (ET).

Single Lever Implement Control
The joystick control replaces the three implement levers for controlling the bowl, apron, and
ejector. Also incorporated into the joystick is a thumb rocker for setting the apron position. A
rocker switch operates the bail on the 637G push-pull, or activates the auger mechanism for
auger-equipped 631G’s/637G’s. Thumb switches are used to control the cushion hitch, and
activate the transmission hold function for all models.

The joystick control system allows the operator to control the machine without removing their
hand from the joystick. Both operator effort and stick travel has been reduced. These features,
combined with the enhanced seating positions provided with the new Cat Contour Series Seat,
help reduce operator fatigue and increase productivity. The joystick controller uses a
combination of hydraulic and electronic controls, allowing the joystick functions to be tailored to
the machine.
