a. have a deep and principled understanding of how educational processes relate to
larger historical, social, cultural, and political processes.
b. have a direct experience in the classroom.
c. can demonstrate and practice the professional and ethical requirements of the
teaching profession.
d. can facilitate learning of diverse types of learning environment using a wide range of
teaching knowledge and skills.
e. can be creative and innovative in thinking of alternative teaching approaches, take
informed risks in trying out these innovative approaches and evaluate the
effectiveness of such approaches in improving student learning.
f. are willing and capable to continue learning in order to better fulfill their mission as
teachers.
Course Description
This is a basic course on child and adolescent development focusing on current
research and theory on the biological linguistic, cognitive, social and emotional dimensions
of development and the factor that affect the progress of development.
The coverage of the course is structured to cover the key dimensions of the
development of children and adolescent physical, linguistic, cognitive and socio-emotional
development. For each dimension, the core contemporary research and theories are
covered. Particular emphasis is given to factors that have been identified as having positive
or negative effects on the natural course of these development processes. In addition, some
focus is given to the exceptional cases when children or adolescent vary from the natural
course.
The coverage of these ideas is intended to provide future teachers with the broad yet
fairly detailed understanding of the development processes students undergo and do that
such understanding may be used to guide all dealings (i.e. formal instruction, informal social,
etc.) with the students.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
 Compare and contrast, organize and synthesize the different theories of growth,
development and learning in all children and demonstrate awareness on the
applicability of these theories as they impact children through adolescent;
 Articulate their own views and ideas on how children and adolescent grow;
 Appreciate, value and respect the difficult and complex processes that students of
different ages go through; and that students of different ages go through;
 Explain the impact of early experiences – including the spectrum of child and family
diversity – on healthy development and learning;
 Identify the risk-factors for and the characteristics of potential developmental delays
and disabilities and the procedures for appropriate screening and referral;
 Identify strategies supportive of typical and atypical development and the learning
patterns of each child and adolescent; and
 Express some insights regarding how teaching and learning process should take into
consideration the various forms of knowledge regarding child and adolescent
development.

2. Socialization and the development of identity and social relations
3. Theories of the development of moral reasoning, attitudes and beliefs,
Kohlberg, Turiel, Gilligan, socio-cultural theories
4. Factors affecting development – parenting, media influences, role models,
peer groups and interactions
5. Exceptional development – leadership, oppositional disorders, juvenile
delinquency developmental personality, affective and mood disorders,
nonverbal learning difficulties.

Course Policies
1. Regular class attendance is a course requirement. Students are encouraged to attend
class punctually. A 15-minute portion of class missed is counted as an absent.
2. A medical certificate issued by the attending physician or school nurse is required for
absence due to illness.
3. Classes begin at the exact times specified in the schedule of classes. Tardiness in three
(3) consecutive times will be counted as one (1) absent. Five consecutive absences
without any valid reason shall be automatically dropped from the class roll.
4. No one is allowed to use any electronic device during class discussion and
examinations. All cellphones must be turned in discreet or silent mode when the class
begins.
5. Attendance will be taken during each class. Students must be present during the
entire class period to be marked present. Going out of class earlier than schedule is
not allowed.
6. Submission of projects/requirements should be on time. There would be deduction in
every late submission of the said requirement.
