Early Japan (until 710)
During the Yayoi Period, the rice culture was imported into
Japan. With the introduction of agriculture, social classes
started to evolve, and parts of the country began to unite
under powerful land owners.

Nara and Heian Periods (710-1192)
In the year 710, the first permanent Japanese
capital was established in Nara.
The power of the clan reached its peak with 5
Fujiwara Michinaga in the year 1016. After
Michinaga, however, the ability of the Fujiwara
leaders began to decline, and public order could not
be maintained. Many land owners hired samurai for
the protection of their properties.

After the Heiji Rising (1159), a struggle for
power between the two families, Taira
Kiyomori evolved as the leader of Japan and
ruled the country from 1168 to 1178 through
the emperor.

Kamakura Period (1192 - 1333)
In 1185, the Minamoto family took over the control
over Japan after defeating the Taira clan in the
Gempei war. Minamoto Yoritomo established a
new military government, the Kamakura Bakufu, in
Kamakura and was appointed shogun in the year
1192.
Edo Period (1603 - 1868) 8
In the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Ieyasu defeated the
Hideyori loyalists and other Western rivals. Hence, he
achieved almost unlimited power and wealth. In 1603,
Ieyasu was appointed Shogun by the emperor and
established his government in Edo (Tokyo). The Tokugawa
shoguns continued to rule Japan for a remarkable 250
years.

Ramen
●
Ramen is a noodle soup that contains a
delicious broth with portions of pork, egg, fish
paste (Naruto) and vegetables, including
onions, garlic and even seaweed. In Japan,
people make long lines in the restaurant to
enjoy this dish, so much so that those
restaurants that make the tastiest ramen often
run out of ingredients within two or three hours
of opening.

Sushi

Sushi is well known throughout the world and
surely when they talk about Japanese food, the
image of this dish comes to mind. The sushi
consists basically of a portion of rice (gohan) to
which is added a piece of fish or seafood,
vegetables or other ingredients.

Takoyaki
●
Takoyaki is one of the best selling Japanese
dishes at festivals. It is a kind of flour croquette
with a piece of octopus inside. These octopus
balls are cooked on an iron plate with hollows
and once they are made you can add a sauce
or other ingredients to the customer's choice.
