which Shakespeare presents the cruel and erratic behavior of the people in the 11th Century.
Macbeth Thane of Glamis, Shakespeares main character, experiences his somewhat fame but
later become anxious and confused after he murders King Duncan. Later in the tragedy he learns
that he cannot be killed by a man born by a woman but is later killed by Macduff. Written and
first performed in 1606, the cruel nature of man and woman in ¨The Tragedy of Macbeth¨ could
Shakespeare relates every character in ¨The Tragedy of Macbeth¨ not to humans but
the flaws of human beings. William reveals the story through a narrators voice. The narrator is
simply an observer. However, the audience knows,for example, that Macbeth did murder King
duncan and that he sees the ghost of Banquo. It is obvious that the characters in the tragedy know
less than the audience. However, William, never tells the audience exactly how Macbeth is
feeling. Instead he gives clues, like his actions to make the audience think and understand how
Macbeth feels.
Macbeth has literally become so consumed by his desire for power that he becomes a
tyrannical and violent monster who ultimatley destroys himself.¨Stars, hide your fires!
Let not light see my black and deep desires.¨(Act 1, Scene 4) . Later Lady Macbeth starts to
question his manhood and whether he will go through with murdering King Duncan.¨I dare do
all that may become a man; who dares do more, is none.¨(Act 1, Scene 7). Later in the
tragedy he does all that is needed to complete the prophecy and become the man he wants to be,
but also sacrifices his sanity to gain it. As he loses his sanity he start to go crazy and see ghost.
As all this guilt is building up on Macbeth His wife continues to encourage this insane
behaviour.¨Macbeth: If we should fail. Lady Macbeth: We fail? But screw your courage to
the sticking-place,
And we'll not fail¨.(Act 1, Scene 7) Macbeth given the confidence by lady Macbeth goes to
murder Duncan; Lady Macbeth rings the bell to signal that Duncan's attendants are asleep.
Macbeth goes to murder Duncan. As he returns from the murder in shock she soothes him and
tells him to wash the blood off of his hands. While he goes to plants the dagger to make him less
suspicious. As she does that she realises that she has blood on her hand but calm she goes to
wash it off and they get away with it with no immediate consequences.
Upon everyone learning that Duncan had been killed macduff already suspects that
Macbeth has killed Duncan; Macduff asks why Macbeth did kill the attendants.(Act 2, Scene 2)
Finally completing the task he assigned himself. As Macbeth is crowned king hes still paranoid.
With him being paranoid that turns to fear and his fear turns to violence. Even though Macbeth is
crowned King and Lady Macbeth Queen she is still is happy and may be ill from the bad actions
they commited.¨ Nought's had, all's spent Where our desire is got without content.¨(Act 3,
Scene 2) They together become more paranoid and suspect someone might be trying to kill
Macbeth as he killed Duncan.¨We have scorched the snake not killed it¨(Act 3, Scene 2)
Now even though they have acted violently once they might do so once again out of fear. He
later sends murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. With no worry Macbeth continues to feast and
later sees Banquos ghost out of guilt and ambition. When Lady Macbeth sees her husband freek
out she dismisses everyone from the feast out of fear he will talk to much.
While the moon is out Lady Macbeth sleepwalks and relives the moment she
convinced Macbeth to kill duncan while saying ¨out, damned spot¨.(Act 5, Scene 1) Lady
Macbeths guilt makes it impossible for her to hide the horrors that she and Macbeth have
committed. Later Lady Macbeth commits suicide as Macbeth is about to go to war with
Macduffs Army but confident that he wont be killed because of the witches prophecy he
becomes bored.¨Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from
day to day To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death¨.(Act 5, Scene 5) To reliant on the prophecy Macbeth dies and is
beheaded by Macduff.

violence comes with fear and more violence. He becomes overwhelmed with fear, ambition, and
insanity. This leads to him fighting a war he cannot win and is killed by Macduff. The cruel
nature of man and woman in ¨The Tragedy of Macbeth¨ may well be a reflection to that era and
culture.
