2. INTRODUCTION
2.1. Overview
EDD is a product of DATACOM’s DmSwitch family geared to offer intelligent LAN/WAN demarcation services
for last mile Metro Ethernet access.
EDD enables managed access connections according to IEEE 802.3ah (Ethernet First Mile – Operations,
Administration and Maintenance) and 802.1ag (Connectivity Fault Management), housed as a standalone
device with a full range AC/DC internal power supply. WAN ports are to be used with SFP modules, allowing
flexibility of optical configurations and varying distances (SFP modules are sold separately).
Centralized management is achieved through DATACOM’s DmView Network Management System, which
offers a graphical user interface to monitor the state and condition of the unit, network conditions as well as
configuration and inventory management functions.
EDD also offers additional QoS services which enables traffic prioritization and bandwidth availability control at
the demarcation point.

The 2104G2-EDD front panel contains 4 RJ45 LAN ports, 2 SFP 100-X and 2 SFP 1000-X WAN ports, RS232
Console port and Ethernet Management port. Also contains ports and device LEDs.
When performing installation and maintenance operations of optical fibers, do not stand close or look
directly into the fiber outlet with unprotected eyes.
Electrostatic generated by human body may damage the electrostatic sensitive components on the
equipment.
The rear panel of 2104G1-EDD E1/120 and 2104G2-EDD E1/120 has one BNC connector for Clock Output,
one RJ45 for G.703 120Ω IN and OUT, an air exit for the blower and one AC/DC power connector.
The rear panel of 2104G1-EDD E1/75 and 2104G2-EDD E1/75 has one BNC connector for Clock Output, one
BNC for G.703 75Ω IN and one BNC for G.703 75Ω OUT, an air exit for the blower and one AC/DC power
connector.
The pinout of Console and out-of-band Management ports are shown in Figure 10 and Table 3 respectively.

3. MAKING CONNECTIONS
Use Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) or Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP) cables with RJ45 connectors. Connect one
end of the cable directly in the switch port and the other in the other network device.
Check Table 5 to make sure the cables that are being used for the network are the correct ones.
1. Insert the SFP transceiver into any SFP cage of the switch. There's only one orientation that the
module can be plugged. The optical connector must face outward. The slot connector must face down for the
upper bays, and up for the lower bays.
2. Slide the module into the slot and press firmly to ensure it is securely placed.
Inserting or removing an SFP module can be done without powering off the switch. SFP transceivers are
hot-swappable, but make sure there are no network optical fibers connected to the module before
removing it! (Remove optical fibers before removing SFP modules).
After this, attach the security locker according to the figure below:
SFP modules that can be used with EDD and each respective maximum fiber length are described in the tables
below:
These modules are the most commonly used. Contact technical support for the complete and updated
SFPs module list.
Signals over optical fiber are transmitted via lasers. Although the lasers are compliant with the
requirements of Class 1 Laser Products and are eye safe in normal conditions, never look directly at a
transmit port when it is turned on.
• Choose a location where RJ45 and SFP ports can be easily reached, allowing LEDs to be
visible.
• EDD box is made of plastic, so don’t put heavier equipments over it.
• Site’s temperature should be kept within 0°C to 50° C and its humidity within 10 to 90% non-
condensing.
• Do not block airflow exit so provide approximately 5 centimeters (2 inches) of space on all sides
of the device.
Before connecting any cable to the equipment, be sure that the grounding system is functional.
After installing the switch, plug one end of IEC-320 standard power cable into the AC receptacle located
at the rear panel of the switch (see in Figure 7) and the other end into a local power source outlet. Power
LED should light, indicating the switch is correctly powered.
If DC power is used, power cable must be cut close to the AC sockets connection plug and connected in
a way that the socket central pin corresponds to protection ground and the other 2 pins for the power
supply (see in Figure 13). Equipment’s shelf is connected directly to the protection ground.
