Foreword

Sustaining productivity and profitability is one of the major challenges to the

agricultural scientists for fulfilling the food demand of growing population in
the country. Crop production is an important branch of agricultural science
which emphasizes on the crops to be cultivated in a particular climate and
in each kind of soil, and water management practices to be followed in order
to increase productivity. It is basically conversion of environmental inputs
(solar energy, CO2, water, soil nutrients) into economic products in the form
of human or animal food or industrial raw material. Since crop production
plays a key role in enhancing the total production by improving productivity
resulting in food and nutritional security, so the students should know in
depth about its important aspects.

This teaching manual prepared by Prof. Janardan Singh includes important

aspects of crop production besides production technology for major crops
being grown in the State. I am sure that this manual will prove to be a
valuable reference for all the undergraduate students of agriculture and
allied sciences.

The author deserves commendation for his painstaking efforts and I extend
my heartiest congratulations to him for bringing out this comprehensive and
useful manual.
