Balse was a popular dance in Marikina, Rizal during the Spanish times. Balse (valse in Spanish)
means waltz. This dance was performed after the lutrina (a religious procession) and the music that
accompanied the dancers was played by the musikong bungbong (musicians using instruments made of
bamboo).

The purpose of this dance is to bring rural and barrio communities together during
celebrations. It also serves as the dance of newlywed couples during their wedding feast. Nowadays, this
dance is being performed on stage to entertain audiences.
MUSIC
Balse is usually performed after a religious procession called Lutrina with the music played by a
musical instrument called "musikong bumbong" that is made up of bamboo.
The costumes for a girl are Balintawak style with tapis, soft panuelo and corcho while the
costume for a boy is Barong tagalog, white trousers and chinelas.
