Operations Report
January 2019

Overview
o The New Year is here. Ambassadors are ramped up and ready to go. We are looking forward to all the
new things that are coming forth. We have Public restrooms on the agenda, and also the recreation
of 13th and Broadway. 13th has been a trouble area for decades. The area has suspected drug
activity, suspected drug dealing, and constant loitering. It has been the most intimidation area in
downtown for decades. The goal this year is to make the area more welcoming. Downtown Oakland
is the golden nugget of Oakland. You can travel to just about any place in the bay area from
downtown. This comfortability attracts tourist from all over. We need our visitors to feel invited and
welcomed. We also plan on partnering with big businesses and properties to see if we can utilize
their business front to ass some “spark" to plan and gloomy business fronts. Last but not least we
want to see if we can convince the city to add more adequate lighting to the streets, and certain
areas where car break-in are high.
o There will be a total of twelve new businesses coming into the district, some of which are already
open. The businesses range from coffee bars to evening eats, and drinks, healthy on the go, to pop
up art galleries. A few of the businesses are expansions of already existing chains, and some are the
beginning of a new chapter. The Ambassadors have been sure to support the new owners as they
prepare to settle in before openings. Those that have opened, Ambassadors have been there for the
big day, with heaping handfuls of support. For businesses that haven't opened, the anticipation of
their arrival is swelling each moment.
o After a long line of turmoil, and being shut down for a string of months, the Tribune Tavern is set to
return. It was announced in late 2018 that the restaurant would reopen under new management.
the restaurant closed due to what was labeled as creative differences between the two owners of
the business.
o Oakland's first outdoor ice rink was a complete success; it even made the news, as this was an
historic event. People from all over the Bay Area made their way down to enjoy the event. The rink
was outfitted with colorful lights to illuminate the ice in an array of colors, there were also speakers
lining the rink, to play everyone’s favorite Christmas carols. There was a snack bar open to provide
tasty hot chocolate for children and warm tea for parents. There were decorated hay bales for
seating, and a host of fresh pine Christmas trees surrounding the lot and seating areas for that
winter wonderland feel. A course ambassadors did as we always do and provided as much support as
we could to the visitors. We are hoping that the ice rink will return next season.
