1) Objective:
This method statement provides the details of the test procedure adopted for
carrying out initial vertical compression load test.
2) Scope:
The scope includes conducting initial load test near A-1 of the Bridge (Subject to
revision).

The test pile shall be reinforced and concreted up to ground level for visual inspection.
Top weak concrete below the existing ground level shall be chiseled and finished with
good concrete. The area around the pile shall be excavated up to around 50 cms below
the ground level. The loose concrete on the top shall be chipped/chiseled off and the
head of the pile shall be finished smooth and level. A bearing plate is placed on the head
of the pile for the jack to rest.
The anchor pile shall be kept at a distance equal to or more than 3 times the dia of test
piles. Also the minimum distance between the anchor piles will be kept 1.5times the dia
of under ream bulb.
Test load on pile is 970 t and test pile top is 44.59 m & bottom of pile is 7.090 m.
The testing arrangement made as shown in drawing compression load is applied to the
pile top by means of a hydraulic jack against rolled steel joist, or suitably designed and
fabricated plate girder anchored to the pre-designed anchor piles installed symmetrically
around the test pile. The load on a pile is applied by a series of vertical downward
incremental load each increment being of about 15% of estimated load.
Load shall be released and each unloading stage shall be maintained for at least 15min
and the subsequent elastic rebound in the pile shall be measured. After that next stage
loading shall be applied and results shall be taken as per above for each stage of
loading .The final test load shall be maintained for 24h.
Settlement reading shall be taken before and after and the application of each new load
and at every 15 min until the application of next load increment.
Settlement shall be recorded with minimum 2 dial gauges for single pile and 4 dial
gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity for groups, each positioned at equal distance around -the
pile and normally held by datum bars resting on immovable supports at a distance of 3 D
(subject to minimum of 1.5 m) from the edge of the pile, where D is the pile stem
diameter of circular pile or diameter of the circumscribing circle in the case of square or
non-circular pile.
The test load shall be maintained for 24 hours and displacement shall be recorded as in
above. Displacement shall be measured at every hour interval up to 24 hours.
Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value of 12 mm
unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis of nature and type of structure
in which case, the safe load should be corresponding to the stated total displacement
permissible.
50 percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal 10 percent of the pile
diameter in case of uniform diameter pile.
