Belief in Allah (One God)

Q. What is belief in Allah

The Belief in Allah is that you should believe that Allah is the Sole Creator Sustainer Provider
and the One in Whose Hand is the disposal of all affairs. Everything stands in need of him, but
he stands in need of none. He is the only one who is worthy of being worshipped. He has the best
Names and perfect Attributes.

The doctrine of God is the foundation of the religion of Islam and is central to the teachings of
the Holy Qur’an. God is the Supreme Being who exists independently of everything else. He is
the sole Creator of the Universe, the Maker of the Heaven and Earth.

According to Islam, no event occurs in this Universe without God’s knowledge and implicit
consent. He is the ultimate source of every action and happening, animate or inanimate. God
created not only the galaxies and stars, but also the life-form on this earth and elsewhere. He is
the Nourisher and Sustainer of all creation; He is their Lord.

The belief in Allah Comprises four matters.

The belief in the Existance of Allah

Belief in Allah’s Lordship (Raboobiyyah)

Belief in Allah’s Worship (Uloohiyyah)

Belief in Allah’s Names and Sifaat (Attributes)

Belief on oneness of Allah

Belief in God, the Creator and the Master of the Universe, is common to all religion. But the
Islamic name ‘Allah’, in Arabic, applies only to One God and to no one else. Islam advocates
belief in the absolute Unity of God in its entire purity as its very foundation. Oneness of God
means that He is the God of all people: past, present and future.

The Holy Qur’an gives the important message that Allah is One. He is Independent. He does not
need any support. Everything depends on Him. He has no father and has no son or daughter.
There is none like unto Him. (Holy Quran Chapter 112, verses 2-5)

Allah is the creator and controller

Islam stresses the need to have firm belief in various attributes of Allah, the Creator and the
Controller of the Universe. He is the Lord of all the worlds. He is the Gracious, the Merciful. He
is the Master of the Day of judgment. (1: 1-4)

For human beings, He is a very personal God. He listens to their supplications and prayers
(2:187). He provides for all their needs (42:20). He overlooks their shortcomings and forgives
their excesses (39:54). He is there whenever they need Him, in distress or prosperity (13:27). He
deals with His creation with mercy, love and compassion (3:31).

Belief on the existence of Allah

He cannot be seen with physical eyes but reveals Himself to man through His Prophets and
through the working of His attributes. Allah is eternal and infinite. He lives today as He lived
before and will continue to live hereafter. He speaks to people as He spoke in the past. All His
attributes are Ever Lasting.

Monotheism
Monotheism is a religion or belief system that involves just one God.
The doctrine or belief that there is only one God.

Polytheism
Polytheism, the belief in many gods.
Polytheism is the belief that there are many gods. Breaking the word down, “poly”
comes from the Greek word for “many,” and “theism” from the Greek word for
“God.” The best-known example of polytheism in ancient times is Greek/Roman
mythology (Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite, Poseidon, etc.). The clearest modern example
of polytheism is Hinduism, which has over 300 million gods.
The belief in or worship of more than one god.
Benefits of Belief in Allah’s Names and Attributes

1. Getting to know Allah ‫ ﷻ‬better, for belief in Allah’s names and attributes increases
one’s knowledge of Allah, which in turn increases one’s faith in Him. Those who
know and understand Allah’s names and attributes are bound to have their hearts filled
with awe of Him and love for Him and tend to submit to Him alone.

2. Praising Allah by using His most beautiful names, which is the best form of
remembrance of Allah (dhikr), as the Qur’an states, “O you who believe, remember
Allah much.” (Soorat Al-Ahzaab, 33:41)

3. Asking and invoking Allah by His names and attributes, as the Qur’an states, “To
Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call on Him by them.” (Soorat Al-A‛raaf,
7:180) An example of this is to say, Yaa Tawwaab, tub ‛alayya! Yaa Raheem,
Irhamnee! “O Most Forgiving, forgive me! O Most Merciful, have mercy on me!”

4. Allah safeguards the believers against harm and adversity and protects them against
their enemies’ plots, as the Qur’an states, “Surely Allah defends those who are true
believers.” (Soorat Al-Hajj, 22:38)
5. Belief in Allah brings happiness and is the source of a good life, as the Qur’an states,
“To whoever does good deeds, man or woman, and is a believer, We will surely give a
good life.” (Soorat An-Nahl, 16:97)

6. Belief in Allah frees the human mind from superstitions. Those who believe in Allah ‫ﷻ‬
completely rely on Him and are wholly devoted to Him, being the Lord of all the
worlds and the only true God without any partners. As a result, they do not fear anyone
and show their devotion to none but Allah. This frees them from all superstitions and
misconceptions.

7. The best benefit of belief in Allah is attainment of Allah’s good pleasure, admission
into Paradise and enjoyment of everlasting bliss and Allah’s boundless mercy.
