General Reflection

The student teacher reflects on their first few months of practice teaching. GENERAL REFLECTION

For the few months of being a student teacher, I learned and realized many
things. These are the things that made me think of giving up but also made me more
motivated to do better.

The first day I was sent in my practicum site, I asked myself “am I really ready to
teach?” This question was not answered until the end of that first day when I have the
confidence to answer the question. Yes, I am ready to play the role of a teacher. I am
prepared to teach, as far as my knowledge is concerned. This is because the
knowledge and skills I acquired at my college is more than enough. Moreover, it is time
for me to practice what I have learned in the classroom. However, emotionally speaking,
I think I am not yet ready to face students in different attitudes and characters. I still
need to observe, adjust and get to know my workplace better.

During my practice teaching, I encountered many difficulties. I was handling


grade 8 classes and at first I had a hard time dealing with them. They were times that
they were so unruly that no matter what I say or do, they don’t listen to me. Handling 35
students in one class is not an easy task. Their attitudes and behaviors differs and I
admit that this only added to the difficulty I have .The first week of school was my
adjustment period .I used that time to know my students better in order for me to adjust
myself. From this experience, I realized that being friendly to student is not an
assurance that they will respect and listen in my class. I also realized that even if I tried
to be upbeat, if student are not, this will also affect our discussion.

I admit that there were times when I went to school without preparation, without
reading my lesson and without making a lesson plan .That experience made me
realized one thing, that teacher cannot just go to school without preparation. No matter
how easy the lesson is, if a teacher has no plan on how to teach it to students, the
lesson will not flow smoothly and students will suffer.

I also relearned how important sense of humor is in teaching/handling students.


Some of them might be talking with their seatmates and some just don’t want to listen.
When I have noticed that they were not interested to listen, I inserted jokes and I
observed that this caught their attention and they became interested to listen again.

Before, I have been telling to myself that if I become a teacher, I want every
student to learn. During my practice teaching, I realized that it would be a very difficult
task. Not all students are interested to listen, not all students have the same level of
motivation and so, expecting every student to learn only made me feel frustrated.
The experiences I had during my practicum only encourage me to continue and
strive more to become successful in my chosen profession. I know to myself that
teaching is what makes me happy. It made me feel satisfied and proud.
