This symposium addresses recent international trends in the search for pragmatic indigenous and nation-state solutions developed with
the Native peoples of the Americas. Centuries of Change: State of the Native Nations takes a particular look at the work of the
Organization of American States with respect to the human rights, land rights, and civil rights of indigenous peoples. With the
bicentennials of several Latin American countries taking place in 2010, as well as the 100th anniversary of the iconic House of the
Americas—seat of the Organization of American States—and the fall anniversary of the opening of the National Museum of the
American Indian, it celebrates a year full of historical remembrance.

Julie Wolfe
November 5 - December 23, 2010
Opening Reception
Friday, November 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Hemphill Fine Arts
1515 14th Street NW
Washington, DC 20005.
Who conquers whom in the battle between life and death? The
juxtaposition of flourishing life with lurking death in Julie Wolfe’s artwork
addresses the artist’s preoccupation with corruptive elements that challenge
the strength of nature. Wolfe’s imagery reveals the interconnectedness of
life and death, demonstrating their unavoidable coexistence. However
powerful, these formidable renderings are intentionally covert. Not only
does Wolfe subtly incorporate sinister creatures and violent symbols, but
she succeeds in making them beautiful. She lures the viewer into a pleasing
environment infiltrated by camouflaged perils. In the painting titled
―Subversion,‖ a bouquet of blooming fruits and wildlife surrounds a knife
plunging through a human heart. In ―Decay,‖ a seductive topiary hangs
suspended from a chain and oozes with an ominous liquid. Her artwork
parallels the intersections between beauty and violence that exist within and
across cultures, a key example being the ancient artistic and personal
expression of tattoos. Through her artwork, Wolfe blurs the lines between
good and evil, tranquility and violence, and decay and regeneration,
portraying these forces as less antagonistic and more interconnected than
their definitions suggest.
Julie Wolfe received a BFA in Painting and Art History from The
University of Texas, Austin, TX. She has exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery
of Art and the Textile Museum, among others, and currently resides in
Washington DC. Wolfe’s debut exhibition at Hemphill includes recent
paintings, works on paper, and prints.

American history. The Dixieland Jazz Band and the Masters of Swing groove
with medleys from the First and Second World War eras. Special guest soloist

"Beyond the Singularity" tells the final story of the fabled Gastonian civilization. Millenia ago a
great race of technologically advanced beings visited an infant planet. They chose this planet as
the site for the greatest genetic experiment ever conducted in the history of the multiverse.
Experiment #57. Out of their experiment rose many forms of unique and wonderous sentient life.
The existence of these "old gods" was only known through the myths and legends that arose from
the collective consciousness of the sentient lifeforms they created, and eventually passed into
obscurity. Then a genetic anomaly arose from the experiment. This anomaly would be known as
Dingle Doppleganger and would threaten the very fabric of reality on Gastonia. Dingle threw the
multiverse into a dark and terrible age. He destroyed everything, tore reality asunder and
recreated Gastonia in his own image. This image included the spread of his reality to the rest of
the multiverse and Dingle worked toward molding the few Gastonians left into a space faring race.
Now the "old gods" have returned to their grand experiment to find something terrible...
Keep an eye out for some exciting new things to start happening in the months to come in our new
space!!!!! Announcements soon...
JOSHUA TAYLOR was born in New Jersey and continued his downward trajectory in hellish locales
in up-state New York and North Carolina before honing his art skills at Pratt Institute. Upon earning
his degree, he traversed the country, from California to Vermont, pursuing his art career. His fine
art has appeared in galleries in LA, NY, Europe, and the Philippines, and has also been featured in
various publications worldwide. Taylor's current body of work focuses on the history, myths and
legends of his "Gastonian Multiverse", an odd ancient doppleganger reality where the laws of
physics and the very fabric of time and space are falling apart at the seams. He currently resides in
Baltimore where he paints, pays for parking, and works on a series of graphic novels and web
comics entitled Bird & Girl.

Inspired by the gypsum crystals of the Naica Mine in Mexico, COLLIDER (the collaborative team of artists
BigPrototype & Lia Halloran) conceived Folding Unfolding: COLLIDER, an interactive exhibition/installation.
Gallery Admission is FREE. Cutting-edge 3D modeling technologies (Mya and Rhino) allow the exploration of the
geometry of basic crystal by replicating the forms of basic seed crystals: borax, gypsum, neptunite, and quartz.
Sarah Strauss and Lia Halloran met in graduate school at Yale University where they studied architecture and
fine art respectively. Their work is a result of over a decade of conversations about science, energy, gravity,
lesbians and skateboarding. Collider is an exciting opportunity for both Sarah and Lia to push beyond the normal
parameters of their practices and challenge each other to play and experiment.
Lia Halloran is a painter, photographer and professor of Fine Art at Chapman University in Los Angeles. She
received her BA from UCLA in 1999 and MFA from Yale in 2001 and is represented by DCKT Contemporary in
New York City. Lia's “Dark Skate” series, on exhibit in the Terrace Gallery through November 2010, directly
explores the physical relationship between skateboarder and architecture. The photographs take us outside the
studio, exploring corners of urban environments, the undersides of highway overpasses, and overlooks of
magnificent cityscapes. Halloran uses science and the natural world to map out physical and psychological spaces
in her paintings and photographs that address time in ways which stretch our notions of perception. Her work
was recently acquired by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York) and will be on view beginning in
November at the Guggenheim Bilbao in the exhibition “Haunted”.
BigPrototype is a Brooklyn-based design firm and fabrication lab co-founded in 2004 by Sarah Strauss. Sarah
currently teaches a class on Ornament and Decoration at Parsons School of Design SCE. She received her Master
of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture in 2002 and her B.A. in Art History, Fine Arts and Chemistry
from Duke University. BigPrototype is a tactile practice that operates at the intersection of design and building,
occupying a territory that enables a new role in the design discipline.

Director Kaneto Shindo says he conceived of this film "as a 'cinematic poem' to try and capture the life of
human beings struggling like ants against the forces of nature." Using no dialogue, it patiently follows the daily
activities of a family of subsistence farmers on a remote island, turning their arduous chores into a hypnotic
visual rhythm and finding the beauty in perseverance. (Dir.: Kaneto Shindo, Japan, 1960, 94 min., B&W, no
dialogue)
"Reflexions" is the newest series of works by this collaborative team and represents their fourth
solo exhibition at the Marsha Mateyka Gallery.
"Reflexions are inkblots of oppositions. Each of us wrote one of two contrasting words, vertically
using two different ink colors, on facing halves of a small piece of paper, then folded and pressed
them together. Although those original blotted forms have been scanned, greatly enlarged and
output as archival pigment prints on watercolor paper, they remain unaltered from their initial
chance configurations. All imagery emerged serendipitously, beyond our control or intervention,
purely a result of the random mingling of letterforms, fluid inks and viewer perceptions."

The first half of the evening there will be a full performance (120 voices) of Henryk Górecki's "Miserere", written in 1981 to honor the
Solidarity movement in Poland. Górecki wrote the work as a protest against communist government intervention and assault of
Solidarity's activists on March 19, 1981 in Bydgoszcz. After this incident the opposition organizations had been outlawed and in
December of that year Poland had been declared in a state of martial law. During this period, no performance of the work would have
been possible. The "Miserere" was finally premiered (with the composer conducting) in Włocławek on September 10, 1987 at the
town's music festival.
"Miserere" by Henryk Górecki will be the first-ever performance of this work in the Metropolitan DC Area.

UNIVERSE
Anne Marchand & Craig Schaffer
Showing Now - January 28, 2011
The abstract paintings and sculpture of Anne Marchand and Craig Schaffer are well
paired in this exhibition with their graceful swirls and rhythms. Yet, they differ in their
genesis. Marchand paints visual song-poems and joyous expressions of life, using luminous
depth contrasted with surface richness. Schaffer creates sculptural pieces inspired by
science and nature. In this series, his work is based on fractal forms ... the shapes repeating
at different scales created by the ongoing processes of life; such as the branching of
plants to catch the sun.
Marchand has been with Zenith Gallery since its early days, and she has exhibited her
paintings in national and regional galleries and museums. Schaffer, new to Zenith, has also
shown his work nationally and internationally. Both artists' works are also featured in private
and public collections.

Parish Gallery
Washington , DC 20007
202-944-2310
Parish Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition entitled, “Place Names” by painter, Ari Post. This exhibition will open with a
reception from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19th and will run thru November 30, 2010.
“Place Names” are the names given to or held by a geographical location, as a town, city, village, etc.
”The quality of a people’s history is written in the names of the places they have left behind; in the names of villages and
townships, of the hills and misplaced stones. For my history, little is left in the places themselves. My great grandparents on
both sides were born in small villages scattered throughout what is now Latvia , Poland and Russia , almost all of which were
wiped out over the last century. When even these scraps of history are lost, what becomes of the ancestral traditions and
beliefs? And what do they then mean? With cultures so violently uprooted and jostled, what is there to look back to?
Now, these paintings: Are they icons, or are they beggars? Do they close their eyes with their will bent toward God, or are they
just tired, resting, deep in thought? It doesn’t much matter. In my mind there is little difference. I wanted, despite the length of
time and the muddying of waters, to dwell on some faint image of lives past, and to give them back the places where they had
once lived; to allow the traditions and beliefs, now diluted and perhaps fundamentally lost, to linger momentarily. With such a
violent extermination of peoples and traditions, I do not know what will live on.” - Ari Post
“Ari is a trained draftsman and it shows in the work, inspired by contemplation of his Jewish heritage, a recent trip to Israel and a
search for universal spirituality. His paintings are 'old school'—stripped of flash, subject matter irony and mixed media techniques
of many painters showing today. The work is straight oil paining: pigment, linseed oil, turpentine and board, all applied with
earnest, grit and hard labor. The gnarled hands and contemplative faces in the pictures are painted in direct manner and
modeled to volume using interlocking and flowing flat planes accented by strong graphite or etched lines. These works resonate
with a viewer familiar with expressionist work done before 1940, yet the style is unique and surprising to the viewer. This series of
paintings allows a first look into the work of a young ambitious painter with unlimited potential and a deep reservoir of talent
that will no doubt produce much more work.” -David Richardson, painter
Ari Post is a painter living and working in the DC area. Studying illustration and design at Virginia Commonwealth University
in Richmond , he graduated in May of 2009 and came to Washington to find anything the art world had to offer. As gallery
assistant at the Aaron Gallery , and then as journalist and now editor for the local Georgetowner newspaper, he has continued
to pursue a career in the arts. This most recent body of work explores his own genealogy and the state of religion in this
country.

BODYSCAPES by
Bill Travis
"The body is often compared to a landscape. The contours, the hair, the
textures evoke so many hills and valleys, forests, oceans, deserts,
caves. But there is more. What I want to do in this show is to explore the
connections between the body and landscape, not in terms of a one-to-
one correspondence, but as carriers of feeling." -Artist Bill Travis

This sci-fi epic by the great Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky tells of a psychologist sent to investigate the
mysterious emanations of a planet that seem to be driving the crew of an orbiting space station mad. Poetic,
metaphysical, and hauntingly beautiful, it "stands with the greatest science-fiction movies ever made,"
according to film critic David Sterritt of the Christian Science Monitor. (Dir.: Andrei Tarkovsky, 1972, 165

Welcome to Millionaires Row, where the Gilded Age mansions of what is now Embassy Row still exude a
faded elegance. It was here that Martha Blow Wadsworth - an avid sportswoman competed with Theodore
Roosevelt and wealthy hostess Nellie Patterson competed with her sister Kitty McCormick over who had the
largest mansion and whose children would run The Chicago Tribune, the family newspaper. From Union
Station Plaza to Dupont Circle and Washington National Cathedral, author Mark Ozer examines the extant
Beaux-Arts architecture and tells the stories of the buildings, their architects and the socialites and the
politicians who lived and played behind those grand facades" Mark Ozer has translated his interest in
Washington into a series of books. The first, "Washington, DC: Politics and Place" has now been succeeded by
a book that focuses on one of the great streets of the world, our own Massachusetts Avenue. "
The author, Mark Ozer, an honors graduate in History and Science of Harvard College ’53, has in his travels
explored the interaction of history and geography of many of the great cities of the world. Since retirement after a
fruitful career as Professor of Neurology at Georgetown School of Medicine, for the past 10 years has given courses
on history of many of the world’s cities, including Washington at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the American
University in Washington, DC. A resident of Washington since 1964, he has found the place of especial interest as
he has interpreted it to those from all over the world seeking a deeper understanding of the meaning of America.

Performing music by distinguished Mexican composers Manuel Ponce, Miguel Bernal-Jiménez, Silvestre Revueltas,
Carlos Chávez and Arturo Márquez. Four young Mexican musicians--Enrique Reynosa (viola) , Cynthia Saucedo
(violin), David Pedraza (viola) and Alan Saucedo (cello), with one goal: to promote chamber music by Mexican
composers.
In 2004, the group won first place in the MTNA Virginia Chamber Music Competition and later performed at
The White House and The Embassy of Mexico in Washington, D.C. They have also performed in Los Angeles;
Blacksburg, Virginia; Azusa, California; Mexico City and Monterrey.
Improv Duo
7:00 p.m.
Raphael Sudan (Piano) & Olivier Stritt (Drums & Percussion) are influenced by different music styles
such as jazz, electronic music, rock, classical, contemporary or latin american music, they through
improvisation found a central point that allows them to explore all these kinds of music. Based in
Fribourg, Switzerland, where they recorded their first live album in may 2010, they are building up a
reputation that brings them to perform all over Europe.
Beside this duo project, they both have an important solo career, and together with saxophonist
Frederic Zosso play together in the "Square Glasses Trio." They offer a surprising musical trip full of
madness, passion and furious rhythms. Their inspiration will be the only limit!

My First Time features four actors in hysterical and heartbreaking stories about first sexual
experiences written by real people. In 1998, a decade before blogging began, a website was
created that allowed people to anonymously share their own true stories about their First Times.
The website became an instant phenomenon as over 40,000 stories poured in from around the
globe that were silly, sweet, absurd, funny, heterosexual, homosexual, shy, sexy and everything
in between. And now, these true stories and all of the unique characters in them are brought to
life by four actors in this acclaimed 90 minute play. myfirsttimetheplaydc.com

Part 1 of an ambitious black and white photography project by this
CalArts graduate including 36 images documenting road trips taken
by the artist across the country over the past several years. Images
capture cultural markers of American history such as the Biosphere in
Oracle, Arizona, Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine,

assassination at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX. "utopia", the exhibition,

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time graduate degree
program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month mentorship assignment. Fellows
receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance, relocation and travel reimbursement, and full
payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing personal and professional development.
The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New York's Bernard
M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows complete course work via distance
learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon completion of all academic and program requirements.
Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000 multicultural, multiracial
alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and who are effecting positive changes in
communities nationally and internationally. Individually and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable
and just society while serving as role models for future generations.
Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership skills to public
service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to their former or new occupations
more experienced in public policy decision-making and are better prepared to make a strong commitment to
equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the
organization that supported them, recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement
and/or annual giving will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on July 13th (downtown
Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are applying to participate in our Fall
program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager,
HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews. Volunteers then give feedback about their
performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this event by responding to this email!
If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June (last day of the
campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to support our incredible programs. An
easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more details below).
Best wishes,
