Design and operation of the torque converter

The hydrodynamic torque converter consists of:

P pump gear
T turbine and
R reaction element

which form a closed, circular housing (see figure). The pump gear, which is driven directly by the engine, converts the mechanical
energy of the engine into flow energy. In the turbine, which is connected with the output shaft, the oil flowing out of the pump wheel
is deflected. The reaction element (stator), which is fitted between the pump gear and the turbine, has the task of deflecting the oil
flowing out of the turbine again and guiding it back to the pump gear. As a result of this deflection, the reaction element is subjected to
a corresponding torque and thus increases the turbine torque.

The ratio of turbine torque to pump torque is the actual degree of conversion (torque rise). This increases in accordance with the increase
in difference in rotation speed between the pump gear and the turbine. The maximum conversion develops therefore when the turbine
is stationary. It decreases as the speed of the turbine increases (output speed). When the rotation speeds of the turbine and the pump
gear show about an 80 percent match, no further torque rise takes place. The converter is now locked and thus the output torque is
equal to the engine torque.

Design and operation of the lock-up clutch

The lock-up clutch, which is located in front of the torque converter, is a hydraulic multi-plate clutch. Its task is to bridge the converter,
i.e. to provide a mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission and thus to restrict operation of the torque converter
to that area where it is most economical.

The converter is locked up by the automatic engagement of this clutch at a pre-determined ratio of turbine to engine rotation speed
(about 0.8). The lock-up clutch engages when the tractive power of the engine, which has been increased by the converter, has reached
a specific point on the engine’s torque curve. This point is somewhere between 1500 and 1650 rpm depending on the engine. The lock-
up clutch is disengaged again when, as the speed of the vehicle decreases, the engine speed drops to about 40% (this corresponds to
about 900 - 1100 rpm depending on the engine, see figure). Through a kick-down unit on the accelerator pedal, it is possible to influence
control of the lock-up clutch and thus extend the converter’s range of application. In this case the lock-up clutch disengages at a higher
engine speed and reactivates the converter at about 1300 to 1600 rpm, depending on the engine.

Design and operation of the sliding free wheel

The sliding free wheel, which is integrated into the converter, is of the brake roller type. When the vehicle is decelerating it provides a
rigid connection between the transmission and the engine, so that the braking effect of the engine can be fully utilised. It also enables
the vehicle to be tow-started in the usual way.

Design and operation of the drive clutch

The drive clutch, which is downstream of the torque converter, is a dry clutch and is activated by the driver using the clutch pedal.
The action is supported with servo power. A servo unit, which uses compressed air, is built into the housing of the drive clutch for this
purpose. The drive clutch is used only to change gears.

To ensure that the drive clutch is not operated by mistake - that is, to prevent driving off with the clutch slipping, which would result in
overloading the clutch because the converter has increased the torque by 2.5 times - it is designed with an overload protection. This
protection stops the activity of the fuel injection pump if the lock-up clutch is disengaged, if a driving gear is engaged, and the drive
clutch is released all at the same time. In all other cases this lock does not come into operation.

Construction and design of torque converter clutch

Main components of the standard-design torque converter clutch:

W a hydrodynamic torque converter with free wheel

ÜK a lock-up clutch
F a sliding free wheel
SK a drive clutch

Then there are the unit for automatic control of the lock-up clutch,
the clutch release device, a filter and a pump for the oil circulation
in the torque converter clutch and the transmission. In addition
the torque converter clutch is fitted with an integrated retarder.
This retarder is a single flow hydrodynamic non-wearing brake,
which is fitted between the converter and the gear clutch.

This knuckle yoke front axle has an axle load of 8.0 t and an
offset of 60 mm (60/45). It is air suspended and steered, and
is retrofitted by the Titan company. This second steered axle in-
creases the manoeuvrability of the vehicle, particularly when un-
der load and when operating in tandem.

The air suspension enables the axles to have variable loads. The
steering ability is increased further when manoeuvring with an in-
creased load. The forward-trailing axle is always installed 1350
mm in front of the first rear axle.

Cooling

82-dm2 radiator Belt-driven high-speed fan drive (ML3)

The SLT is provided at the factory with the largest radiator avail- Technical Description
able (MP2).
The belt-driven high-speed fan drive (ML3), standard in the SLT,
is powered via the crankshaft at an overall ratio of 1:1.36, deliv-
ering a higher cooling capacity. The cooling capacity is achieved
with a lower use of energy as a result of the maintenance-free
drive. The result is a good cooling capacity where requirements
are high and the engine speed low and/or at low speeds in topo-
graphically challenging conditions.

Rear-mounted radiator

The oil in the torque-converter clutch and the transmission, which

is subjected to a high thermal load when the torque converter or
the retarder are in operation, is cooled via an air/oil cooler and a
hydraulically actuated fan in the rear.
