ARAL (Access Readers to Achieve Learning)

School Year 2014-2015, Pilapila Elementary School, launched Project ARAL, a

reading intervention because it seems clear indication that inadequate development of reading is the
main factor, that accounts for the slow progress in classroom instructions. Based on the results of
2015 PHIL-IRI pre-test, 65 out of 498 Grades II-IV were identified as children at risk ( CAR ) fall on
Non-Reader and Frustration Level. CI Team conducted a survey to know the reasons why they
cannot read and what appropriate strategies and learning materials needed to address the said
problem.
CI Facilitators group the customers according to their reading ability such as identify
the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, can read words, phrases and sentences. They also
considered the availability and dedication of the respected facilitators. Reading class was organized,
monitored and evaluated.
Across the CI journey, problems and hindrances occurred like absenteeism and lack
of interest and attention of some of the customers. But we considered it as a challenge. We tap the
help of the parents and external stakeholders to develop solution such as meeting of the CI Team and
facilitators and preparing instructional materials, venue, schedule and teachers and made
improvement highlights like Training of Teachers on Teaching Beginning Reading (TBR), giving take
home reading materials / enhance Teacher-Child-Parent Approach, monitoring daily attendance
reduces the number of absenteeism of pupils and boost self-esteem of pupils in terms of reading.
Despite of the hardship being encountered, after administering the post-test, 33 or
50% of the Non-Readers and frustration Level were reduced at the end of July, 2015. Students and
parents were happy and thankful because they learned how to read.
At present, Project ARAL is continuous because we are targeting 100% Instructional
and Independent Level in reading from Grade II-VI. Hopefully not only to reduce but to completely
eradicate Non-Reader.
