VERSE:
we began the day with you
turning paper dolls into love
letters sent
through the wind in folds
of guava leaves
ripped, and clothes cut
to fit the shape of the paper
bodies, paper skin.
VERSE:
when noon came,
you took me to the pump
with white underwear dripping
above our dried limbs.
you bathed me in the basin
and we both watched our skin
shrivel, shiver, enfold.
BRIDGE:
once i am old, there’ll be no need
to care for me, another year stapled
into my skin, my legs will grow longer,
VERSE:
by evening you made me
my own cake, half-melted,
reflecting the lightbulb,
burying under your uncut nails,
as you adorn your gift
with yarn icing, sand marzipan
toothpick candles, forever burning.

Intro: Gm C Gm C Bb C Gm C
Gm C
Today, I am quiet, I decide
Gm C
I will wait, and let you speak.
Gm C Gm C
My hands will not stray
Dm Bb C
past my thighs, so that you may move
Dm Bb C
yours in your gestures.
F Am Gm
You are asking me something,
F Am Gm
I am thinking elsewhere –
F Am
I will let you speak.
Bb C
It is odd, how one can hold wind, hold sound,
Gm C
let it cling to the insides of your throat.
Gm C
Like how sweat feels in the wind.
Gm C Gm C
Your voice gets louder,
Dm Bb C
I am thinking elsewhere,
F Am Gm
you think I am ignoring you
F Am Gm
and I almost apologize. Today,
Bb C
I am quiet. I decide.

BRIDGE:
I found a wound at the back of my thigh from seven summers ago when I was looking for you under the
bamboo floorboards, and when I spotted you nursing seven new pups in a nest of barbed wire and
disposed diapers, I pushed through the trash and moved the litter to a safer place and you stood up, blood
trailing from behind, pushing me down, pulling me up, you sank your teeth into my leg, I screamed, but
the puppies are alright, and the air stays still, reeking of milk.

As tribute to sleep,
we will bite our tongues,
let our drool spill in
between worn text
books displaying
photocopied monuments
We will shift
in our metal seats, oblivious,
watching the chalk scrape
the board, we will follow
suit and fold our notes
into unlearned keepsakes
crumpling histories into
1965,
1941,
1899,
1542.

It was not drowse that you felt,
Dm7 G G7
but I sang a song
C Am Em
transposed two steps down,
Dm7 Fm
adlib plucking, wrong lyrics.
C G7sus4
I expected sleep
G G7
to come to you,
F C
I waited, fingers on the frets.
G G7
The night was silent,
F C
if not for the desperate.
C Am Em Dm7
You said,
G G7
"I will close my eyes
C Am Em
soon enough, so kiss me
Dm7 G G7
good night, leave your love
C G7sus4
on my cheek, let your self rest
G G7
in your disquiet."
I (you) dance,
I (you) move
on splintered bones,
my (your) steps
clinking with broken
metal under the skin.
You (I) see me (you), you (I) are pleased
with my (your) grace,
so you (I) keep me (you)
on the edge of your (my) blade.
