Commissioning test Requirements and procedure for Electrical

Equipment
Introduction
Scope: These instruction cover test requirement and procedure for obtaining
desire parameters for electrical equipment in the locomotive. Before proceeding
with test secure the proper schematic diagram for specific locomotive for
guidance during test.

Insulation Resistance and High – Potential Test

Caution: Before making a high potential test, the insulation resistance should be
cheeked with a 500 v megger. Do not conduct high potential test on a circuit with
a megger reading of less than 1 mega ohm as the circuit may be demand.

1. Insulation Resistance (New Locomotive)

 Have multi conductor plugs attached to the governor and tachometer
generator.
 Open the battery switch, BS
 Open ground cut – switch GRCO1 & GRCO2
 Disconnect the battery lead in the battery in the battery component the
close the battery switch – BS
 Close all switches and circuit breakers in the component and on the
control stand,
 Move reveres handle to forward or reveres position. Breaking switch
must be in “RUN” position. Breaking switch must be in “Motoring”.
Move main handle to 6th Notch position.
 Remove EXCP, TRP PANEL CARDS. Tie all high – voltage terminal point
together on the excitation panel. These points are 34B, 34, 34T, 34S,
34A, 34C, 34E, 34G, 34F, 34R,23 and 40V.
 In power circuit of rectifier unit, short AC terminals (R, Y & B) and DC
terminals (GA1 &GA2). Put jumpers between AC and DC terminal (R &
GA 11).
 Measure insulation power resistance between power circuit and
locomotive frame. Measure insulation power resistance between blower
motor terminal R-28 and locomotive frame.
 Measure insulation power resistance between power circuit and
locomotive frame.
 Measure insulation power resistance between power and control circuit
to be sure that they are not tied together.

2. High – Potential test – Power circuit

 Ground control circuit to locomotive frame. Short out load ammeter
with hi-pot wire.
 Attach one terminal of high- potential transformer to locomotive frame
and other side to any convenient point in the traction motor such as
main contact of a “P” or “S” contactor.
 Apply high potential:
a) New locomotive: apply 2000V for 1 min
b) Locomotive in service: apply 1500v for 1 min
 Repeat insulation test.

3. High Potential test – Test control and auxiliary circuit

 Check wiring and terminal board. Current loss connection and faulty
insulation.
 Close all switches and breakers.
 Remove temporary ground.
 Short out the battery charging ammeters with high potential wire. Also
short out lead panel terminal with high potential.
 Attach ungrounded side of high – potential transformer to main
moveable contact of CK contactor.
 Apply high potential of 680V for 1 min.
 Reconnect battery lead. Make sure that leads or connected correctly
with respect to battery polarity.

4. Auxiliary and Alarm circuit sequence and realy sequence check.

 Have all switches “off”, battery switch open controller handles in “off” &
“idle” and “and “ESC” Switch in “idle”.
 Ring out train lines from coupler sockets to terminal boards.
 Charge locomotive air system with at list 70 PSI shop air. If locomotive
has safety control use foot pedal to hold safety control “off” and make a
full indecent application to keep safety control suppressed.
 Close battery switch BS.
 Close master battery breaker MB1 and main control breaker and MB2.

5. Diesel Engine Speed Control Sequence

Preliminary (Motoring)
 Close master battery breaker MB1 & main control breaker MB2. Close
master circuit breaker (MCB) – 1 & 2 close master fuels – pump breaker
FPB-1&2.
 Have main handle in “idle” and reverse handle in “off” the safety control
relay DMR should be energized.
 Have M. U. stop button in “RUN” position.
