Literary Criticism: “Bonsai” by Edith Tiempo

All that I love

I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box.
In the first stanza of the poem, we notice first is the syllables. The first and third lines have 4
syllables while the second and fourth lines contains 5 syllables. Which means the author
balances the use of monosyllabic syllables. It also wants to prevail that we should put little things
in order or in a box. A box means that you want to be secured of something. The author uses
imagery for a thing to be described easily. As we can notice, the word once is repeated twice,
which means the author wants to exagurate and intensify the meaning of love in keeping a thing
or feeling.
All that I love?
Why, yes, but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
In the second stanza of the poem, we can notice the first line is repeated from the first stanza but
it was an interrogative statement or simply contains a question mark. The second and third
lines,we can notice the contradiction and oxymoron of the sentences. On the first stanza the
persona describes a sense of security in everything she organize or keeps. But in the second
stanza the persona opens up with contradicted attitude. On the other hand, oxymoron is present
in the lines 2 and 3. It wants to express that love can be felt in a short period time or and it can
happen eternally.
Son’s note or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a queen,
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill
In the third stanza, Then she goes on to the name of things she loves ko keep. Naming or labeling
in literature implies an idea that if we can name the world, then we can control it. Then, we begin
to think about the kind of people create in life. (Peck and Coyle, 1995). As we can notice, the
lines except the first line uses modifiers. The first line is plain and simple. You can feel that line
contains simplicity therefore, that’s the only line not related to any amount of money. It cannot
buy by someone. Because the feeling of the persona on the first line is natural. In the second and
third lines obviously it describes a Queen, Blue and Indian. A queen symbolizes royalty as well
as the blue color. “And an indian shawl is like a cloth that means the finest cloth in the world”
(n/a,2009) It can relates the gaudy tie on the first line. It wants to express the “showiness”
because the tie and the cloth are always shown and worn. The theme of the author continuously
showing by indicating what she loves in the first line of every stanza.
It’s utter sublimation,
A feat this heart’s control
The persona goes further in explaining that when something occur, positive ways will be
showed. In love, if it was submlimated something good or wonderful can happen.
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size
As we continue the poem, these 3 lines pertaining to a plant named bonsai. Which this poem’s
title. Bonsai is a plant that is dwarfed and must cut the branches to maintain its beauty. This lines
wants to express that to maintain a relationship towards love, we must be careful in taking care
of it. The last line contains methapor. Expressing that we shoul love each other like how we hold
everyone’s hand. It also contains irony. It says that we should control to what our hearts can
show and it can makes our hearts smaller and smaller that in could be.
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
This two lines uses metaphor. Seashells means life. It can be broken if man do it. It conveys that
nothing is eternal. We will come to an end. And the last line wants to warn everyone in doing
bad things while we are alive. We must avoid and lessen all the sins. And be ready to face
consequences when judgement happen.
And life and love are real
Things you can run and breathless hand over
To the merest child
The last 3 lines of the poem wants to leave us a message that everything is temporary. We can
vanish anytime. We cannot predict what will happen tomorrow and on the other days. We must
live and love life like its our last day on earth. We can secure everything but the life in earth is so
short. On the first stanza depicts a temporary happiness. As we go on to the other lines, we can
notice how those happiness will gone as we understand the true meaning of life, That all these
experience is once in a lifetime. We shall treasure and kept even our souls are up high.
