LITERATURE REVIEW
John Milton was an English poet, polemician, man of letters, and civil servant for the
common wealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell. His
service to the government often requires him to stay up late reading and writing. Milton's
eyesight had been steadily declining for years, most likely the result of untreated glaucoma and
by February 1652 he had gone been completely blind. The poem "On his Blindness" is an
autobiographical sonnet in which the author, John Milton meditates on his own loss of sight.
Petrarchan sonnet traditionally focus on love and romance but Milton subverted this in order to
explore his relationship to God.
The speaker of the poem feels he's lost his purpose, that he cannot work anymore
and he ask God for guidance as to what he should do. The voice of his poem is a man who is
see thing with frustration with his incapability of serving his God profitability. The voice of the
poem help us picture out a world that is dark and wide then at the end, it help us image God
with His angels doing his bidding and human at his side singing praise for Him. But at the end of
the poem, he gets the response of he's been looking for, that God is happiest when people are
obedient and do as best as they can making the voice of the poem turns hopeful.
The Author uses figurative languages to express his grievance and discontent. In line
3 to 4 the talent is "death to God". Milton uses Allegory in comparing his situation with the event
in the parable of Talents with him being the third servant who buried his money and God as the
lord. He also uses personification in line 8-10 to express the importance of words and values.
He personifies "Patience" as if patience where a man who replies for him. Patience is his
reasoning for accepting the fact that he is blind. He also uses Metaphor and Alliteration in lines
2, 3, and 4.
For the theme of the poem, The writer expresses his Guilt and Blame as the author
feel guilty that he could not serve his purpose because of his blindness. The theme of Spiritual
light also express in the poem. "Light" is the most focused subject in the poem. Not only in his
eyesight that is important to him but also his spiritual light. The theme I most like is the Fairness
of God, telling us that we always remain worthy in the sight of God.
I highly recommend this poem. This is a piece that should be read by anyone because
of the Hope that it can be passed to a person upon reading it. Especially now a days that many
people undergone anxiety and depression. Reading a poem like this one make a person feel
worthy when they felt they are not. And it reminds us to trust God with his plan.
