1. Derive the equation for work done by the system and heat transferred to the system
for a process with initial and final state variables (P1,V1,T1) and (P2,V2,T2) for the
following conditions.
a. Isobaric process
b. Isochoric process
c. Reversible isothermal process
d. Reversible adiabatic process
2. Derive the expression for change in volume (dV) of and ideal gas in terms of
isothermal compressibility (βT) and coefficient of thermal expansion (α).
3. Calculate the value of the ratio βT and α for an ideal gas in terms of its volume.
4. An Ideal gas at 300 K has a volume of 15 litres at a pressure of 15 atm. Calculate (a)
the final volume of the system, (b) the work done by the system, (c) the heat entering
or leaving the system, (d) the change in the internal energy, and (e) the change in the
enthalpy when the gas undergoes
i. A reversible isothermal expansion to a pressure of 10 atm.
ii. A reversible adiabatic expansion to a pressure of 10 atm.
5. Two moles of a monoatomic ideal gas are contained at a pressure of 1 atm and a
temperature of 300 K. 34,166 joules of heat are transferred to the gas, as a result of
which the gas expands and does 1216 joules of work against its surroundings. The
process is reversible. Calculate the final temperature of the gas.
6. The initial state of a monoatomic ideal gas is P=10 atm and T=300 K. Calculate the
change in the entropy of the gas for (a) an isothermal decrease in the pressure to 5
atm. (b) a reversible adiabatic expansion to a pressure of 5atm (c) a constant-volume
decrease in the pressure to 5 atm.
